Daily Reflections – Composed by the chaplains of Saint John’s Health Center, Santa Monica, California.
We are delighted with and appreciative of receiving a two-year compilation of daily reflections, each consisting of a scripture passage from the world religions accompanied by a brief reflection. The scripture passages were chosen and the reflections composed by the chaplains of Saint John’s Health Center, Santa Monica, California. The scripture passages were taken from the Bible (Christian and Jewish), the Bhagavad Gita and Upanishads (Hindu), the Dhammapada (Buddhist), the Qu’ran (Muslim), the Guru Granth (Sikh), and the Kitab I Aqdas (Baha’i). Our NACC member, Mary Bomba, notes the following: “Once a year, a volunteer goes through the previous year’s reflections and adjusts their dates to correspond to the coming year. For example, the reflections for 2012 just got changed to 2014. Sometimes this process is a little imprecise, so you may occasionally need to correct the date for a feast day, etc. You may also find reflections that pertain to hospital-specific celebrations like Founders’ Day, in which case you may want to create a new reflection for the day.”

September 11 prayers
9/11 Tenth Anniversary Prayer Service – Tim Serban, volunteer partner lead for the Spiritual Care Response Team of the American Red Cross, Washington, DC, coordinated and provided spiritual care on 9/11 as part of the American Red Cross Spiritual Care Response Team at the World Trade Center in New York City.
At the request of the NACC, he has prepared a 10th anniversary prayer service that can be adapted by chaplains for their own use. It will be published online in the September-October issue of Vision, but we present it here first so that member chaplains can begin now to plan a ritual for their own setting.
September 11 Commemoration Service – Joan C. Horgan. D. Min., BCC, is the Director, Pastoral Care Services, for Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital Network. She developed this interfaith prayer service for peace as a way to commemorate the tenth anniversary of Sept 11, 2001, for the Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital Network. This can be adapted/changed as desired by anyone who is interested in using all or part of it. Scripture readings and prayers are included.

Thomas Merton
My Lord God,
I have no idea where I am going.
I do not see the road ahead of me.
I cannot know for certain where it will end.
Nor do I really know myself, and
The fact that I think I am following your will
Does not mean that I am actually doing so.
But I believe that the desire to please you
Does in fact please you.
And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing.
I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire.
And I know that if I do this you will lead me by the right road
Though I may know nothing about it.
Therefore I will trust you always
Though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death.
I will not fear, for you are ever with me,
And you will never leave me to face my perils alone.
