  • CHAPLAIN (CATHOLIC PRIEST)

    National Institutes of Health – Clinical Center – Bethesda, Maryland – The National Institutes of Health (NIH), a part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is the nation’s medical research agency — making important discoveries that improve health and save lives. The NIH Clinical Center (CC) makes it possible to rapidly translate scientific observations and laboratory discoveries into new approaches for diagnosing, treating, and preventing disease as well as training today’s investigators to discover tomorrow’s cures.

    The NIH Clinical Center Spiritual Care Department (SCD) provides spiritual care and support for Clinical Center patients, their families and caregivers during their participation in clinical research protocols in both inpatient and outpatient settings as well as for all Clinical Center staff.

    The Chaplain (Catholic Priest) provides for the sacramental needs of Catholic patients and presiding at daily Eucharist. In addition, the Chaplain’s (Catholic Priest) regular assignment also includes provision of spiritual care to adult and pediatric patients regardless of the patient’s or family’s existential commitments and participates in the overnight, weekend and holiday on-call rotation. Providing spiritual care in a pluralistic environment and ability to address the spiritual needs of an ethnically and spiritually diverse patient population as part of a multi-faith spiritual care team is required.

    Major Requirements

    • Master of Divinity from an accredited institution, OR its equivalent as required by the applicant’s faith group for endorsement in ministry and the applicant’s professional chaplaincy certifying organization.
    • 4 units of clinical pastoral education in a CPE center accredited by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE)
    • Chaplain certification through the Association of Professional Chaplains, the National Association of Catholic Chaplains, OR be able to complete the certification process within 2 years of hire.
    • Endorsement for ministry and current faculties from the appropriate ecclesiastical authorities that will permit the applicant to minister to Catholic patients in a civilian facility within the R.C. Archdiocese of Washington.

    • Previous experience in long term care or experience in working with the geriatric population in another healthcare setting is preferred.
    • A Bachelor’s Degree required. A Master’s Degree in Theology, Religious Studies, Pastoral Care, Spirituality or similar discipline is preferred.
    • Clinical Pastoral Education: 4 units preferred, as well as management experience.
    • A heart for serving others through compassionate listening.
