From the NACC National Office: When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled. (John 11:33)
Our thoughts give way to grief, our lamentations are a cry of helplessness. We turn to God for consolation and reason. Childlike – we can “Look for the helpers. You can always find people who are helping.” – Fred Rogers, American television host, author, producer, and Presbyterian minister.
Chaplains are helpers to all those who are impacted, shocked, saddened and angered by the violence that is or is not reported. This is part of a chaplain’s training and experience. We care for others as we care for ourselves.
NACC prays together for peace and the end of violence. We pray for ourselves as we bear the burden of our social grief over the Ukraine, Buffalo, Uvalde, Tulsa, St. Francis Xavier in Ondo Nigeria; in naming these horrors of violence and disparity we may be able to look past them to see that there are those who are the helpers, whose care and kindness touches those in need.
2. In Vision: Book describes constructive uses of confrontation in spiritual care
Most of us probably flinch when we hear the word “confrontation.” But used appropriately, it can be a helpful tool in pastoral care settings. This week in Vision, John Gillman reviews a new book, “Confrontation in Spiritual Care: An Anthology for Clinical Caregivers.” Click below to learn more.

Also in Vision this week: Moms’ reluctance to let dying children go forces tough reflections
What does a chaplain do when his own theological and medical assessment of a case is very different from the family’s? In our newest Vision article, Jim Manzardo remembers four mothers who insisted on aggressive care for their dying children — and wonders if he could have supported them in a different way.

Vision seeks contributions on moral injury
Amidst pandemic, war, mass shootings, and social division, many of you have probably suffered moral distress or moral injury – to say nothing of the people you minister to. In the coming weeks, Vision plans to take a closer look. We are interested in articles from you about definitions; social and theological context; coping strategies for yourselves and your institutions; and much more. Please send a summary of your idea to Vision editor David Lewellen, dlewellen@nacc.org
3. Congratulations to NACC’s newly certified Chaplains!
