1. Executive Director’s Reflection *
One of the most cherished graces of my past 14 years as Executive Director has been to be inspired and nourished by your stories of your callings to chaplaincy. One of the most frequent themes of these call stories has been your facing personal or family suffering or loss or having faced personal struggles that God’s grace and your deepened spirituality led you to hear and respond to the calling to be with others in their suffering, loss, and personal struggles. God’s nearness and healing in the midst of experiences we never wanted, anticipated, or thought we could handle, brought us to hear our calling to be with those who need God’s nearness and healing through us. It’s humbling and holy, sacred.
I appreciated with this gratitude again your callings as I read again the very familiar Sunday’s second reading of St. Paul, 2 Corinthians 12: 7-10,
I am deeply grateful for and awed by your prophetic vulnerability. I believe those who witness your willingness, your draw, to be with those in their weaknesses, fragility, and fear, find themselves deeply grateful for your graced strength in those times.
I find the phrase, “I am content with weakness…” to be a comforting phrase more than “I will rather boast more gladly.” “I am content” communicates more to me the sense of “I can live with this. It’s ok because I know through this God keeps me close and helps me to be close to others in their scary and agonizing times.” “I can live with this” not because “I” have the strength “on my own” to live with it, but because God’s nearness and nourishment keeps me going.
Thank you for your callings to chaplaincy. Thank you for sharing your stories with one another. Thank you for saying yes to this healing ministry. Thank you for daily letting the Lord know that “I am content. I can live with this” so that God can be near to others through you.
David Lichter, D.Min.

14. Save a new date for our Buffalo National Conference!
Our NACC members recently received a special notice that we changed the date of our next annual National Conference from end of October 2021 to Friday, March 25, 2022 through Monday, March 28, 2022. While we are disappointed that we needed to change the date again, the NACC Board of Directors appreciated the recent survey of our members that gave us convincing data that a fall 2021 date would not provide the attendance needed to make a National Conference successful. So, mark your calendars for 2022! We will meet in 2022!

15. Register now for next week’s July NACC webinar: COVID Vaccinations: A Scientific and Theological Discussion Presented by Ruth Mullowney-Agra MD and Brian M. Kane PhD, July 15, 2021 ~ 12pm – 1:30pm Central Time *
Overview and Objectives
There’s been a tsunami of information relative to COVID-19 and vaccinations. Unfortunately, not all of the information is based on science. What does Catholic Social Teaching tell us about the duty to uphold the Common Good relative to public health? Does individual formation of conscience play a role in the decision to get vaccinated? This webinar explores both the science and the theology surrounding COVID-19 and vaccinations. The presentation will include pastoral guidelines for chaplains when dealing with people who are hesitant to get vaccinated.
As a result of this webinar, participants will be able to
- Explain contemporary science related to the SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19, as well as the efficacy of available US vaccines (ITP2, OL1).
- Articulate Catholic theological and moral teachings supporting the importance of vaccinations (ITP2.1, ITP4.1).
- Address ethical concerns related to vaccinations (OL4).
- Demonstrate how chaplains can pastorally engage with people who are hesitant to get vaccinated (OL4.1).
NACC Certification Competencies Addressed in this Webinar
ITP2, ITP2.1, ITP4.1, OL1, OL4, OL4.1
