1. Executive Director’s Reflection
Yesterday was not only the second Sunday of Advent, but also, December 8, the feast of the Immaculate Conception. It provided a graced opportunity to reflect on Mary and her role in salvation.

The reading of Luke’s narration account of the Annunciation (Luke 1:26-38) is so familiar to us. The “Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with you.” is repeated by us in every “Hail Mary”. “The Lord is with you,” reminds us of the beginning of each Eucharist and repeated often throughout the service. “May it be done to me according to your word.” is a mantra each of us wants to repeat with every breath we take. It’s a beautiful story we never tire of hearing and reliving again and again. I cannot wonder what it would have been like to encounter the invitation. How prepared am I to embrace a central role in God’s plan? Yet I do!

The second reading yesterday from Ephesians (Eph. 1:3-6, 11-12) really helped me to understand and embrace in my own way the mystery of the invitation. We read:

Brothers and sisters:
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
who has blessed us in Christ
with every spiritual blessing in the heavens,
as he chose us in him, before the foundation of the world,
to be holy and without blemish before him.
In love he destined us for adoption to himself through Jesus Christ,
in accord with the favor of his will,
for the praise of the glory of his grace
that he granted us in the beloved.

In him we were also chosen,
destined in accord with the purpose of the One
who accomplishes all things according to the intention of his will,
so that we might exist for the praise of his glory,
we who first hoped in Christ

Wow, that really hit home for me, as it reminded me again of what Mary must have known through grace. We are blessed (as she was) and have been given every spiritual blessing in the heavens! That’s so hard to imagine and comprehend, as “heaven” seems so far away and unimaginable! Yet, we have every spiritual blessing from “there”! That we have been “destined” for “the praise and glory of his grace”! Being “full of grace” is also our destiny and present reality! Wow! Yet, also we have been chosen and destined, as Mary was. And our existence if for his praise and glory – just like Mary’s Magnificat! My soul glorifies the Lord!

Isn’t this remarkable? So, yesterday’s feast was not just another “good for Mary” for being called to be Jesus’ Mother and for saying “yes” to God’s grace. It was a call again for me (and you) to marvel at our blessedness, to embrace anew our being chosen and our destiny and purpose.

How prepared am I to embrace anew my central role in God’s plan? Be it done unto me…

Blessings,

David Lichter, D.Min.
Executive Director

6. In Vision: Hospital staff can alleviate NICU parents’ stress
When a newborn is whisked off to the neonatal intensive care unit, it sends the parents on a journey they probably weren’t prepared for. In the current issue of Vision, Louise Eggen describes the trauma such parents endure, and how chaplains, nurses, and other parents can help them feel a little more normal.
