1. Executive Director’s Reflection *
As we all enter into this week that includes our national holiday of Thanksgiving, we at the NACC extend our deepest gratitude for you, for your families, and for your ministry and profession of healing you continue to provide, whether you are employed or whether you are retired or whether you are in between those in a space of uncertainty. Our calling to be ministers of healing is our daily mission no matter where or with whom we are. Thank you for yours.

I was struck by yesterday’s second reading for the Feast of Christ the King from Colossians, as it began with this verse, “Brothers and sisters: Let us give thanks to the Father, who has made you fit to share in the inheritance of the holy ones in light.” So, we start this week, invited into a disposition of gratitude because of who we are and what has happened to us and what has been given us by our God. “He delivered us from the power of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”

Wow, with the power of darkness all about us in so many forms, I don’t always feel delivered or transferred to the Son’s Reign. Sometimes I think I missed that transfer and got off at the wrong spot, when I feel more haunted, taunted, and hassled by the Darkness. Yet, I am called to believe and live this message. Being grateful for who I am, what has happened to me, and what has been given me, seems like not just an antidote to depression or discouragement, but an act of faith and hope, and hopefully lived-out daily in love. It’s not trying on some positive-thinking habit but living in the realm to which I have been transferred!

I found some solace in the etymology of the word transfer from the two Latin words, trans (across) and ferro (to carry). This etymology humanizes the word more and helps me imagine being carried across to this Realm. So, I didn’t miss my point of transfer after all, but was carried all the way by the One Who loves me. The rest of the verse of that second reading from Colossians is the beautiful Christological hymn that helps us imagine Jesus, “the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation” in whom all was created, and ultimately, “For in him all the fullness was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile all things for him, making peace by the blood of his cross through him, whether those on earth or those in heaven.”

We get a sense that we were not just transferred to this new realm of light, but Jesus, who was there before, did all the heavy lifting, “through him to reconcile all things for him, making peace,” and is our end point. Our expression of gratitude seems more like an “Amen, so be it” to who we are and what has happened to us and what has been given us by our God!”

Can we have an Amen?

Blessings,

David Lichter, D.Min.
Executive Director

CHAPLAINCY NEWS, EDUCATION AND PROFESSIONAL SUPPORTS

10. You can still register for our final 2019 Webinar on December 5, 2019!! Storying: The Gift that Keeps on Giving, presented by Rod Accardi, DMin, BCC and Karen Pugliese MA, BCC-PCHAC. *
On Thursday, December 5, 2019 – 12:00 noon to 1:30 p.m. Central Time NACC is offering the webinar, Storying: The Gift that Keeps on Giving, presented by Rod Accardi, DMin, BCC and Karen Pugliese MA, BCC-PCHAC. At the heart of spiritual care is eliciting, listening to, discerning spiritual significance within, and honoring patient stories. Chaplains do not engage in this ministry in isolation, but rather within a web of connection. StoryCorps Legacy encourages and supports the act of reminiscence for people with serious illness and their families. This webinar will tell the story of how we became aware of StoryCorps Legacy, applied for and secured funding for the program, selected and trained Facilitators, partner with staff to identify patients for recording, and how we continue to spread the word and celebrate the fruits of this partnership.

Program Objectives

  1. Preserve and share the stories of people affected by serious illness, including caregivers.
  2. Articulate the necessity of organizational alignment (e.g. Patients First, Teamwork, patient
engagement, employee engagement, Magnet Relationship Based Care, etc.).
  3. Strategize ways of operationalizing Narrative Theology that honors patient/family/caregiver stories, partners with staff in enhanced listening, preserves the voice of the patient for generations to come.
