1. Executive Director’s Reflection
From the New Heaven and New Earth excerpt from Revelation 21 where the vision of a New Jerusalem is coming down, we get these powerful sentences: “Behold, God’s dwelling is with the human race. He will dwell with them and they will be his people, and God himself will always be with them as their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there shall be no more death or mourning, wailing or pain, for the old order has passed away.” (Rev. 21:3-4). I read these sentences as the essence of our healing ministry.
Is our ministry not one that communicates, “God’s dwelling is with the human race?” In the midst of the suffering, loneliness, fears, uncertainties that breed human isolation and divine distance, that lead us to feel estranged from others and wonder where our God is, our spiritual care ministry embodies the belief and conviction that “God’s dwelling is with the human race.” As we do not walk away or leave early from, or treat with less than highest respect the one we care for, our dwelling with is God’s dwelling with that one. If they will be my people, they will be God’s people. If I am always with them, God comes to be known as always with them. If we wipe the tear and help mitigate the pain of death and mourning, they will come to know that the “old order” of human failure to be there for another in that vulnerability and brokenness has passed away.
We know deep in our hearts that this New Heaven and New Earth is not a misty-eyed longing for a miraculous, marvelous future intervention by God. It’s being witnessed to now in our daily dwelling with our human race in a way that people come to realize and cherish their own dignity and destiny in and through our case. We become their Book of Revelation, giving them a glimpse of God who does not abandon them, but wipes tears, holds in mourning, and stands with suffering.
Thank you for embodying for me this New Heaven and New Earth, and confirming for me in your ministry that “God’s dwelling is with the human race!”
Easter Season Blessings,
David Lichter, D.Min.
Executive Director

5. In Vision: Communicating in the language of dementia
Patients with dementia still have thoughts and feelings to share, and with a little attention, a careful observer can learn what they are. In the new issue of Vision, Maria Shedleski offers valuable advice on how to learn the language of dementia.

2019 NATIONAL CONFERENCE, MAY 31 – JUNE 3, 2019
10. Please pray for the success of our May 31-June 3, 2019, NACC National Conference!
Please pray for the success of the NACC Conference in 2019 being held Friday, May 31, to Monday, June 3, 2019, at the University of St. Mary of the Lake Conference Center in Mundelein, IL. It will be preceded by preconference workshops and our NACC retreat.
You have read often that this year’s Conference is unique as we are emphasizing not only professional chaplaincy and the mainly healthcare settings where we minister, but also the diverse settings where the healing ministry of pastoral care is needed and being offered, whether prisons, jails, homes, streets, or senior centers. Several of our board certified chaplains are working in and with their dioceses to prepare men and women, who might never become board certified, to be the best pastoral care providers they can be, and to realize this service is continuing the healing ministry of Jesus in the name of the Church. Several of our BCC’s will be leading workshops on this ministry.
We are grateful to the Partners in Planning from the Raskob planning process who helped prepare for this conference. Nearly half of them have been engaged in planning and/or are providing workshops for this Conference also. This is a wonderful partnership.
So please keep our Conference in your prayer, if you are not able to be there in person. Be sure to join our Business Meeting on Saturday via live-streaming!
11. Conference Registration is now closed!
Registration for the 2019 NACC Conference has now closed. Thank you to all who have registered to attend; we look forward to welcoming you to the USML campus. If you have not yet paid your registration fees, please remit to the NACC office immediately, or your registration may be cancelled.

Not coming to the conference this year, but still wish to achieve some education hours? You can still register to participate via live-streaming for several sessions of the NACC Conference. Streaming registration will close Monday, May 27, 2019. Here are the sessions:
On Thursday, May 30, the NACC Conference will offer three (3) 6-hour formation/training programs that focus on the diverse ways and settings that pastoral care is provided as a ministry of the Church. These unique, never-before-offered sessions by national leaders in the field are each specially designed with six distinct sessions within the 6-hour schedule providing the participant time to stretch and break, as well as send in questions and comments during the session. They will be also recorded so that if you need to miss part of them, you will still be able to view them. These are excellent resources for future use also. If your parish needs formation, please encourage them to sign up!
Each live-streamed session is $75 per connection.

17. The next NACC webinar is coming up on June 13 – register now!
- Thursday, June 13, 2019. Group Dynamics and Dynamic Groups: Basic Support Group Facilitation Skills, presented by Rev. Traci Houts, MDiv, MSW.
While chaplains have often provided grief support groups and spirituality groups, very few learned group facilitation skills from their seminary/theological education or CPE programs. As healthcare continues to grow in ambulatory and community settings, there is a knowledge and experience gap for chaplains to successfully partner with key stakeholders and facilitate groups. Whether it is grief groups and behavioral health groups or caregiver groups and chronic pain groups, once a chaplain has foundational facilitation skills, their skills can be adapted across populations and settings.
Program Objectives
- Discuss opportunities for Spiritual Care in groups: inpatient, outpatient, community
- Explore group types and their corresponding strengths/weaknesses, i.e., open vs. closed; non-structured peer support vs. curriculum based
- Review best practices: co-facilitation, screening and referral, keeping boundaries
- Teach strategies for achieving balance and managing a variety of personality types
