1. Executive Director’s Reflection *
In yesterday’s Gospel we have the familiar third resurrection appearance that included, “When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, ‘Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?’ Simon Peter answered him, ‘Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.’” (John 21:15)
I know I still wonder why Jesus asked this “more than these” question the way he did. Certainly, scholars point out the parallel of Peter’s three denials that match the thrice-invoked question of Jesus, giving Peter pause and potential redemption. Some wonder whether it was Jesus’ gentle chiding of Peter, who boasted of being the one (the more?) who would never turn on Jesus. So now Jesus with a needling communication urges Peter with a “Let’s move on now, Peter. You got this.” An offer of healing and wholeness. Do you love me? Seems like a fairly straightforward question, doesn’t it? Peter’s reply of “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” could end also with a question, “Don’t you, Lord?” or “Are you doubting me, like I denied you?”
It’s good to know again that Jesus just invited Peter (and you and me) to erase any doubt that I might have in where Jesus stands with me by offering me, as he did Peter, to feed, tend, and feed those Jesus cares about and for. Doubting Jesus is a luxury we can’t afford. What is Jesus’ concern? Those he loves.
It reminded me of how the theologian Gerard S. Sloyan once described baptismal grace as “an indelible character in the soul that says you care for people only God worries about.” It has stayed with me. Is that my baptismal calling, as it was Jesus’ instruction to Peter?
As we know, this intimate exchange is followed by Jesus’ premonition prompting of Peter, “Amen, amen, I say to you, when you were younger, you used to dress yourself and go where you wanted; but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” (John 21:18) John follows with the explanation, “He said this signifying by what kind of death he would glorify God. And when he had said this, he said to him, ‘Follow me.’” (John 21:19) However, this handing oneself over later in life reminded me of an observation Raymond Studinski made years ago about the experience of our later years.
So, what does this mean for me today? While it seems as simple as showing my love for Jesus in my caring “for people only God worries about,” it also has something to do with living with and letting go in what it has come to mean to live this way. How I daily embrace the Risen One in my life. How I encounter His own ways of gently chiding me when I question myself (or Him) or when I let myself experience anew His tender but insistent needling of me, “David, you got this. Let’s move on. I need you to care about those who concern me!”
What you do hear in the question, “Do you love me?”
Easter Season Blessings,
David Lichter, D.Min.
Executive Director

4. NACC members! Please complete the US Bishops’ Conference Cultural Diversity Survey – Respond by May 17, 2019. *
We are grateful to our members for participating in past USCCB Committee on Cultural Diversity in the Church and the Subcommittee on Certification for Ecclesial Ministry and Service Cultural Diversity Survey. We continue to be the Catholic association with the highest participant rate. Thank you! The survey seeks information and feedback on cultural diversity within the National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC) and other national ministry organizations.
The cultural diversity survey is part of the strategic partnership between the USCCB and national ministry organizations to learn if those in, and preparing for, leadership roles in the church reflect the diversity of the church in which they are, or will be, serving.
This voluntary and anonymous survey will help the bishops’ conference to:
Your help is deeply appreciated. We ask you to complete the survey by May 17, 2019. It is 10 questions and should take about 10 minutes to complete.
The link to the survey is here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/culdiv19 .
If you have any questions you may contact David Lichter at dlichter@nacc.org or the USCCB Assistant Director for Certification, Dr. Marc DelMonico, by email at mdelmonico@usccb.org.

6. BE ON THE LOOKOUT: It’s never too early to think of NACC Annual Award Nominations! *
This may be someone you work with, network with, or meet in the course of your ministry, or a fellow chaplain you will meet again at the 2019 Annual Conference.
While in your ministry environment, you may admire the service done by a colleague. There may be a new face on the team that is young, energetic with a true enthusiasm for the profession. You may be grateful for the support of a mentor or colleague. Do you interact with someone who is not a chaplain but truly values and supports the profession of chaplaincy?
NACC honors these important people in our ministry through our Annual Award program. Send your thoughts to Ramune Franitza at rfranitza@nacc.org. She can forward the 2020 nominating instructions to you.
At this year’s conference we are honoring:
2019 Distinguished Service Award to Sr. Emily Demuth CSC, BCC
2019 Emergent Leader Award to Sean Doll O’Mahoney MDiv, BCC
2019 Outstanding Colleague Award – Harry J. Dudley, DMin
Also consider if you would like to be member of the panel that considers the nominations and chooses the awardees for 2020. Contact Ramune Franitza at rfranitza@nacc.org for the Panel Roles and Responsibilities criteria and application.
7. Thank you in advance for your donating to our NACC 2019 Annual Member Campaign! *
Dear NACC members, you have received our 2019 Annual Member Campaign letter requesting your participation in the campaign. Thank you for considering this request. Over the past ten years, the percentage of our member participating has increased from 6 percent to 22 percent. Would you join your other members to increase that percentage? Your giving helps us immensely. Please also pray for the success of this campaign!

11. Thank you to our many members who contributed to the May 4 & 5, 2019, Certification Interviews! *

24. You can still register for our NACC Webinar, Thursday, May 16, 2019. Racial Disparities at the End of Life and the Catholic Social Tradition, presented by Sheri B. Browne, PhD, BCC. *
This webinar has two goals: 1) discuss the persistence of racial disparities in health care, specifically referencing Black individuals’ perspectives on end-of-life (EOL) care; and 2) propose that the Catholic Social Tradition offers a framework for addressing healthcare disparities. Black Americans bring perspectives to EOL care that reflect their experiences as a historically marginalized and oppressed people. These perspectives help to illuminate more broadly dynamics that underlie healthcare disparities in the United States. The Catholic Social Tradition’s emphasis on solidarity, justice, and the pursuit of the common good will be highlighted as a framework for relational and intentional approaches to ending racial disparities in EOL care.
Program Objectives
By the end of this webinar, participants will:
- Understand the historical and cultural roots of racial disparities in health care, particularly as they impact Black Americans’ end-of-life choices.
- Gain new knowledge about the Catholic Social Tradition.
- Make connections between a persistent problem in health care and how Catholic doctrine can inform solutions to this problem.
