1. Executive Director’s Reflection *
Oops, I did it again. I found myself doubting God’s prompting and invitation to trust and move forward. Happens now and then. Still happens too often, but it happens. I am not surprised when my misgivings can get the better of me, but I am always grateful when I sense God’s smile at me again, and a call to me to be more. He doesn’t stop inviting, even when I can be a persistent doubter.
I guess that’s why yesterday’s Gospel of Luke 5:1-11 made me also smile again. Yes, it’s the familiar call of the disciples by the Lake of Gennesaret. After the long night of fishing, Simon and company were asked by Jesus to take him a little off shore to teach the crowd. Then, Jesus told Peter to “put out into the deep water” where they had been already. Peter balked, questioned, doubted (like I will), then gave in. Of course, we know the result – abundance. Then, Peter was on his knees reminding himself and Jesus that he was a sinful man, and wanting a distance from Jesus because of his self-disappointment in his doubting. Jesus’ reply to Peter was curious. He did not say, “That’s OK, Peter, we all make mistakes.” Rather he said, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” Jesus named fear, not self-disappointment in Peter.
This made me wonder a bit. So it’s fear at the basis of self-doubt and misgivings? Of what should I be afraid? Failure? Inability to respond well? Called to be more than I think I can be? These all seem to be true, yet I had to realize again that God’s self-gift and call to me is only grace-given and supported. Peter blurted “Depart from me!” Maybe it’s in my self-chosen isolation, and not believing Jesus within me and about me, when my fear shows itself. Fear lurks in self-imposed distancing from God, believing myself not worth it again and wanting to separate myself again.
How important it is to accept God’s desired intimacy and trust God’s invite again!
Blessings,
David Lichter, D.Min.
Executive Director

3. Today is the 2019 World Day of the Sick! Here is Pope Francis’ Message and access to NACC Prayer Cards *
Here is Pope Francis’ 2019 World Day of the Sick message prepared in late November 2018. You can access it here: w2.vatican.va/content/francesco/en/messages/sick/documents/papa-francesco_20181125_giornata-malato.html
Key passages include the following:
I urge everyone, at every level, to promote the culture of generosity and of gift, which is indispensable for overcoming the culture of profit and waste. Catholic healthcare institutions must not fall into the trap of simply running a business; they must be concerned with personal care more than profit. We know that health is relational, dependent on interaction with others, and requiring trust, friendship and solidarity. It is a treasure that can be enjoyed fully only when it is shared. The joy of generous giving is a barometer of the health of a Christian.
You can access our NACC 2019 World Day of the Sick Cards for the caregiver and the one receiving care. www.nacc.org/resources/spirituality-and-prayer-resources/world-day-of-the-sick.
4. Members in the News *
Our NACC member, Laura Parsons, BCC, has a wonderful article about her call to chaplaincy in her St. Joseph University’s Alumni magazine. You can read it on page 30 of this link:
https://msj.edu/alumni-friends/mount-news-alumni-magazine/
5. In Vision: Patients get a chance to put their legacy on paper *
The end of life is a unique opportunity to look back and reflect. At the Mayo Clinic, the Hear My Voice program allows patients a structured chance to talk to a chaplain about the spiritual meaning of their lives, resulting in a document that can be shared with family and loved ones. Beba Tata writes about the program in the current issue of Vision.

NACC realizes the value of networking and appreciates members taking time out of their schedules to share and lend support to others who are ministering in the same area.
Unfortunately, the calls lose value if there are few participants, limiting the sharing that could take place. In order for the call to have the most value for participants, we will postpone a call until the next quarter if there are fewer than 5 participants who have registered for the call a week prior to its scheduled date.
To sign up, contact Ramune Franitza at rfranitza@nacc.org for more information, questions, comments or concerns.

Thursday, February 14, 2019. Demystifying Happiness: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy presented by Gillian L. McLean MTS, BN, SCP, RP.
In his book, The Happiness Trap: How to Stop Struggling and to Start Living, Russ Harris (2008) writes, “The more we try to avoid the basic reality that all human life involves pain, the more we are likely to struggle with that pain when it arises, thereby creating even more suffering.”
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a new evidenced-based approach that suggests a different way of dealing with the challenge of suffering and the desire for pleasure. The goals of this presentation are to explore the trap of happiness, and to show how Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, through its instruction to “be present,” “open up,” and “do what matters,” can liberate us from the happiness trap.
Program Objectives
By the end of this webinar, participants will:
- Recognize the myth of happiness and identify how this contributes to human suffering.
- Be familiar with the history and development of ACT
- Understand the fundamental processes of ACT and appreciate how ACT can be utilized in clinical practice.
