1. Executive Director’s Reflection
On December 1, 2018, I attended the funeral Mass and burial of my dear friend and classmate, Marv Mich. He had learned of his cancer just three months before, and it took him fast. He lived and ministered in the diocese of Rochester, NY, for more than 30 years. When I read yesterday’s Gospel from the first chapter of Luke, where Jesus entered the synagogue in Nazareth “where he had grown us,” he read that famous passage from Isaiah 61:1-2.
It struck me this time that Jesus then sat down, and all eyes were intently looking at him, as he said, “Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.”
I don’t often think about God’s Word being fulfilled. I need to believe that more.
On the back of Marv’s funeral card was this passage from Isaiah 61. You don’t often see that. More often we use the consoling words of Psalm 23. However, in Marv’s case, I appreciated it. He believed that God’s word was being fulfilled in every act of kindness and justice advocacy for the oppressed. As one of his colleagues was quoted, “He was wonderfully wise and so knowledgeable about Catholic social teaching, but he had not even a sliver of arrogance,” said Ruth Putnam Marchetti, social ministry coordinator at Catholic Family Center. “When he saw a need, whether an individual in need of shelter or an organizer trying to make housing more just, he jumped in and did his best to take care of it.”
The words of Isaiah, and from the mouth of Jesus, are being fulfilled, not only in our hearing, but in our own jumping in and doing our best to take care of it. I need to ask myself today, do I really believe that I also am anointed to be that one through whom God’s word is being fulfilled as I tend to those in my care? Is it for me just a job or is it a Word-fulfilling ministry?
Blessings on your ministry in which God’s word of mercy and compassion is being fulfilled!
David Lichter, DMin
Executive Director
2. 2019 World Day of the Sick Message and Prayer Cards
In this past week, the Vatican has posted Pope Francis’ 2019 World Day of the Sick message prepared in late November 2018. You can access it here: http://w2.vatican.va/content/francesco/en/messages/sick/documents/papa-francesco_20181125_giornata-malato.html Key passages include the following:
I urge everyone, at every level, to promote the culture of generosity and of gift, which is indispensable for overcoming the culture of profit and waste. Catholic healthcare institutions must not fall into the trap of simply running a business; they must be concerned with personal care more than profit. We know that health is relational, dependent on interaction with others, and requiring trust, friendship and solidarity. It is a treasure that can be enjoyed fully only when it is shared. The joy of generous giving is a barometer of the health of a Christian.
You can now also access our NACC 2019 World Day of the Sick Cards for the caregiver and the one receiving care. www.nacc.org/resources/spirituality-and-prayer-resources/world-day-of-the-sick

You may find the application materials and more information here: www.nacc.org/certification/applying-for-cac-certification

Bonnie J. McCulley, BCC, and Kathleen M. Ponce, BCC, will provide participants with an overview of the NACC Associate Chaplain certification process. 9. In Vision: Money, money, money: Serving God, not mammon, at the end of life
At the end of life, both patients and loved ones are often thinking about money. But through shame, guilt, anger, or more, such thoughts are rarely spoken. In the new issue of Vision, Anne Millington writes about how wealth intrudes in the dying process, and how chaplains can try to make it a force for love.
10. NACC Networking calls for January/February/March 2019
For our 2019 Networking calls, NACC is using Zoom as its conferencing software. As the time of the call gets closer and you have replied that you will participate, I will forward both passcodes for a visual connection via internet or, if you prefer, you can still call in via a phone line. Please note, you will need to pre-register for the calls in order to receive the ZOOM passcode.

NACC realizes the value of networking and appreciates members taking time out of their schedules to share and lend support to others who are ministering in the same area. Too few participants limits the value of the call. Therefore, we will postpone a call until the next quarter if there are fewer than 5 participants who have registered for the call a week prior to its scheduled date.
To sign up, contact Ramune Franitza at rfranitza@nacc.org for more information, questions, comments or concerns.
11. Have you visited our NACC Choose Chaplaincy site?
As part of our outreach efforts to make younger Catholics aware of chaplaincy as a profession and a ministry of the Church, our NACC Marketing Advisory Panel, along with Westwords Consulting, have been working over the past months on materials and a web presence for this population.
It can be reached at https://www.nacc.org/about-nacc/choose-chaplaincy/
AND from http://choosechaplaincy.org/ or http://choosechaplaincy.com/
You might have seen for some years on our website home page the “Consider Chaplaincy” link to a webpage on materials for promoting chaplaincy. This Choose Chaplaincy (much more direct than ‘consider’!) site replaces that.
Also, we recently sent posters and brochures on chaplaincy to over 1500 Catholic campus ministry and Newman Centers.
Please share this link and these materials with those you know. If you know of a program that could use this information, please let Ramune Franitza know at rfranitza@nacc.org.

22. Register today for our NACC February webinar in our 2019 series!
In his book, The Happiness Trap: How to Stop Struggling and to Start Living, Russ Harris (2008) writes, “The more we try to avoid the basic reality that all human life involves pain, the more we are likely to struggle with that pain when it arises, thereby creating even more suffering.”
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a new evidenced-based approach that suggests a different way of dealing with the challenge of suffering and the desire for pleasure. The goals of this presentation are to explore the trap of happiness, and to show how Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, through its instruction to “be present,” “open up,” and “do what matters,” can liberate us from the happiness trap.
Program Objectives
By the end of this webinar, participants will:
1. Recognize the myth of happiness and identify how this contributes to human suffering.
2. Be familiar with the history and development of ACT
3. Understand the fundamental processes of ACT and appreciate how ACT can be utilized in clinical practice.
