1. Executive Director’s Reflection
It was an interesting coming together of several themes as my wife Jackie and I attended the evening Mass in Santa Maria in Trastevere, one of the oldest churches in Rome, this past Sunday after we arrived in Rome. Here are some impressions I share with you, as I reflected on them.
First of all, the Church was stunning with its 12th century simple Romanesque bell tower and brilliant mosaics of Mary and the Saints. The piazza outside the church was crammed with people lingering, playing, drinking, selling trinkets – all seemingly unaware that a Mass was going to start. However, as we entered the atrium, a mix of beggars, people visiting before entering the church, a bishop vested with several altar boys, and others trying to make their way into the church composed this motley crew of humanity. A small choir from the community of San Egidio led the provided meditative chant form of music with a very diverse community praying along.
The presider, a local bishop, gave a homily on the call to authenticity, drawing from the first chapter of James. He spoke on showing the wisdom of humility (James 1:21 “Humbly welcome the word that has been planted in you and is able to save your souls.”), on living what you believe (James 1:22 “Be doers of the word and not hearers only, deluding yourselves.”), and on seeing and responding in charity to the widow and poor (I recall the beggars, the majority older women – widows?).
Commenting on the Gospel, he noted that among so many in the Church, also among its leaders, a tendency exists to want to hold to a narrow view of what is “pure” and “right” and miss the deepest call to live lives of integrity that require a profound humility to know what within oneself prevents one from seeing what needs purifying in one’s own life.
He repeated what Jesus emphasized in the Gospel, “Nothing that enters one from outside can defile that person; but the things that come out from within are what defile. From within people, from their hearts, come evil thoughts, unchastity, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, licentiousness, envy, blasphemy, arrogance, folly. All these evils come from within and they defile.”
I was touched by his simplicity and sincerity. I believed he believed and lived what he spoke. That he was a doer, not just hearer, of the word. So, am I? So, will I be more so? Will I recognize and admit the sources of my own self-destruction, and that of others?
As we went up to receive communion we were given on our tongues the Lord’s Body and
Blood through intinction, a dipping of the consecrated host in the consecrated wine. Here I was called right away to receive humbly the Lord in this way. Not to be indignant at receiving the Lord in this way, but reverent and desiring the Lord in the way that He comes to us every day.
On leaving the church that evening, we noticed that the begging older women had already left the atrium. However, how will I respond in the ways He invites me to be pure, responsive, and a man of integrity?
Blessings,
David Lichter, D.Min.

Send us your nominations for the NACC Distinguished Service Award, Emergent Leader Award, and Outstanding Colleague Award. The deadline is Friday, September 14. You can learn more and access the nomination forms at www.nacc.org/about-nacc/annual-awards.
Do you know someone who has inspired you in the work and profession of chaplaincy? We want to know. Now is your chance to express your gratitude and nominate this person. Please consider nominating. These awards will be presented at our 2019 NACC Conference May 30 – June 3, 2019, at the University of St. Mary by the Lake in Mundelein, IL.
4. In Vision: Case study research points way forward for chaplaincy
Case studies may be a way for chaplains to show their value in a secularizing world, Steve Nolan told the NACC-APC conference. To read more about his plenary speech in Vision, click below.

5. NACC Leadership and Volunteer Opportunities
One of the best ways to advance the profession and experience the value of being an NACC member is by serving with your member colleagues in volunteer leadership within NACC. You have gifts, along with experience/expertise for your personal and professional background that contribute to NACC’s mission and would be of great service to our members.
Also, your involvement would help you get to know other NACC members, network with professional colleagues, and better understand the broader field of professional chaplaincy. So many of our members who served in leadership roles expressed how that service enhanced their appreciation for NACC and chaplaincy.
On this page (www.nacc.org/membership/volunteers) you will find a variety of opportunities.

Registering for the call, even if you cannot participate, will allow you to receive notes of the conversation and resources shared.
NACC realizes the value of networking and appreciates members taking time out of their schedules to share and lend support to others who are ministering in the same area.
Unfortunately, the calls lose value if there are few participants, limiting the sharing that could take place. In order for the call to have the most value for participants, we will postpone a call until the next quarter if there are fewer than 5 participants who have registered for the call a week prior to its scheduled date. To sign up, contact Ramune Franitza at rfranitza@nacc.org for more information, questions, comments or concerns.
9. Have you visited our NACC Networking Forums yet?

CHAPLAINCY NEWS, EDUCATION AND PROFESSIONAL SUPPORTS
16. Survey identifying trends in spiritual care will aid succession planning strategies
CHA, in partnership with the National Association of Catholic Chaplains, is surveying spiritual care providers this month and next to inform the ministry’s ongoing efforts to attract and groom the next generation of mission and pastoral care professionals and make sure they have the tools and training to do their jobs.
The majority of mission leaders and pastoral care providers in Catholic health care are over age 60, so succession planning in these fields is a priority.
“The goal of the survey is to gather information necessary for the succession planning of this critical role within Catholic health care,” said Brian Smith, CHA’s senior director of mission integration and leadership formation.
“In addition, the survey will help us learn where systems are utilizing spiritual care providers such as in acute care, post-acute care, clinics, home health, virtual visits, etc.,” Smith said. “Having trained, qualified spiritual care providers in all care settings is essential both to maintaining Catholic identity and to the ministry’s commitment to caring for the body, mind and spirit of all patients.”
Survey responses will provide insight into how the long-running shift in care delivery from acute care to outpatient care impacts upon the delivery of pastoral care and mission services.
NACC Executive Director David Lichter noted that “Results of this 2018 effort can hopefully also assist in spiritual care being viewed as an essential service and embraced by executives who are making decisions about investing in spiritual care as vital to the future of Catholic health care.”
Click here to read the announcement about this upcoming survey.
17. Pastoral Care Week / Spiritual Care Week will be from October 21-27, 2018
Pastoral Care Week gives opportunities for organizations and institutions of all kinds and types to recognize the spiritual caregivers in their midst and the ministry which the caregivers provide.
The theme for Spiritual Care Week in 2018 is “Hospitality – cultivating time.”
Spiritual care has a wonderful history of cultures and religions that build communities’ sense of support and meaning. This year’s theme continues the emphasis on hospitality with a focus on cultivating time. The welcoming and belonging associated with hospitality require time that is treated as precious in developing relationships.
Are you planning something for PCW 2018? Tell us about it! Contact us at info@nacc.org or 414-483-4898 to tell us how you plan to celebrate the week. Send pictures and details of events after you’ve held them, too! If you give permission, we’ll share them here.
Get resources: artwork, suggested activities, and other ideas are available at: www.nacc.org/resources/spirituality-and-prayer-resources/events-and-observances-pastoral-care-week or www.spiritualcareweek.org

September 20, 2018, is the deadline for submitting applications for the NACC 2019 webinar series. Please consider applying.
