1. Executive Director’s Reflection
Yesterday’s Gospel ended with “When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, for they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things.” (Mk. 6:34) The first reading from Jeremiah was from his Chapter 23 that reflects on the bad shepherds who mislead their sheep. www.usccb.org/bible/readings/bible/Jeremiah/23:1
We know so well that the word “pastoral” derives from the Latin word pastor meaning shepherd, and the adjective pastoralis meaning relating to a shepherd. (www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/pastoral) This Judeo-Christian word is so familiar to us and has been used ubiquitously in the chaplaincy world for the past century. Thus, pastoral care and chaplaincy have their roots in this Judeo-Christian understanding.
We are also aware of the importance of understanding pastoral care and the profession of chaplaincy beyond its Judeo-Christian roots. Thus, the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care (www.spiritualcare.ca) has Spiritual Care Practitioners and Psycho-Spiritual Therapists, not chaplains. Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE) has revised its name to keep its ACPE brand, not spelling out the acronym, and adding The Standard for Spiritual Care and Education (www.acpe.edu). So now it is known as ACPE The Standard for Spiritual Care and Education. Most of us now refer to our Spiritual Care, rather than Pastoral Care, department, seeking to communicate that we tend to the spiritual and emotional needs of people of all faiths and no faith, and what we are doing is not just Judeo-Christian practice.
Yet, how can we understand, embrace, and appreciate our “pastoral” care? I know I have written about this recently, but I think it’s worth offering some reflection on this again with the hopes that it stirs your own reflection on what motivates and nourishes your professional practice. Part Two of the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care (ERD’s), “The Pastoral and Spiritual Responsibility of Catholic Health Care Services,” uses the words “spiritual” and “pastoral.”
Certainly, as Catholic Christians, we are motivated, nourished, and strengthened by the Buon Pastor, the Good Shepherd, and in Him we live and move and have our being. Thus, our ministry is always pastoral in this sense.
Also, how we view the human person as one whom God created (human dignity) and Christ redeemed (destiny). We would add here caring for the whole person – the one we were called to love. Or, as the ERD’s expressed, this care “embraces the physical, psychological, social and spiritual dimensions of the person (CHA 2009).” This also could be considered our “pastoral” perspective and ethical sensitivity.
Would not also “pastoral” have everything to do with the community or “flock”? The community of compassion is the context within which we live and serve. This is also our “pastoral” component.
So we do meet the spiritual needs of those we serve. However, we are grounded in and guided by our pastoral approach to this profession. Not everyone would embrace or view their ministry as pastoral care. We appreciate and respect that. It makes sense that our care departments are called spiritual care, not pastoral care, as we meet the spiritual needs of those we serve. Yet, within our Catholic Community, pastoral care certainly names our experience.
What do you think? How does this strike you? Make sense or not?
Blessings on you and your pastoral care ministry!
David Lichter, D.Min.
Executive Director

9. NACC Networking Call for July 2018
If you wish to participate on this call and are not already on this particular call list, please contact Ramune Franitza at rfranitza@nacc.org for more information. Time listed is Central Time Zone.
- Thursday, July 26; 3:00 p.m. CT NACC Palliative/Hospice Networking Call
NACC realizes the value of networking and appreciates members taking time out of their schedules to share and lend support to others who are ministering in the same area.
Unfortunately, the calls lose value if there are few participants, limiting the sharing that could take place. In order for the call to have the most value for participants, we will postpone a call until the next quarter if there are fewer than 5 participants who have signed up for the call a week prior to its scheduled date.
NACC appreciates the effort it takes to participate and also hears of the value these calls provide our members.
10. NACC now offers NACC members opportunities for online networking!
Welcome to all members who want to continue the discussion started during network calls, or to discuss topics that need attention when a call is not scheduled! You may now network through an online conversation. Sign into the NACC website with your user name and password. Choose NACC Professional Networking Forums. You will note a list of Forums. Choose the one you are interested in: e.g., Nurse Chaplain Group. You may either choose an existing topic to comment on or begin a new topic discussion by initiating it on this page. This forum will grow as members share thoughts, questions and ideas. Remember that this is a PILOT and any feedback directed to Ramune Franitza at rfranitza@nacc.org will help us make it more user friendly.

The ministry setting is not what is typically associated with chaplaincy but has been very successful. Reverends Becky and Tina will speak about the joys and challenges of this specialty ministry and some of the spiritual programs that they offer.
Program Objectives
- Learn about an alternative ministry model that serves some of the most vulnerable in our society.
- Learn about the unique challenges posed by this ministry and how to best address them.
