1. Executive Director’s Reflection
Last weekend, Jackie and I had our youngest grandchild (7 months), Violet, for a long weekend, while her parents, Kate and Imani, were out of town for a wedding. It was a long time for little Violet. Sunday afternoon we Facetimed her parents so that Violet could see and hear them. We were not sure how that would go. However, I wish I would have photographed for you the expression of her WHOLE BODY, as her eyes, face, arms, legs, and torso all exuded sheer delight and excitement to see and hear her parents! She just lit up with wide smiling eyes! We could not contain our laughter and delight! How replenished, refreshed and renewed she was as she experienced the loves of her life! Amazing what three minutes of Facetime did to revive her, even at 7 months!
I could not help to reflect… when was the last time my WHOLE BODY exuded such delight at life and the loves of my life? When was my last RENEWAL AND AWAKENING in this way? Hmmm… Yet what will you and I expect from any renewal time this summer or in the coming months? What does being revived look like for you, for me?
In light of Violet, I found myself reading differently the first lines of yesterday’s reading from Ezekiel 2: 2-5, “As the LORD spoke to me, the spirit entered into me and set me on my feet, and I heard the one who was speaking say to me…” While this was a call to a tough ministry, preaching to the obstinate, yet how might we read “the spirit entered into me and set me on my feet”? How might renewal and awakening time be like allowing God’s Spirit to enter me and set me on my feet again? How does that image work for you and me?
Again, in light of Violet, I read a little differently the very familiar “thorn in the flesh” second reading of 2 Corinthians 12:7-10 where we read about an indwelling in me, the power of Christ,
I imagined how draining and frustrating that was for Paul, yet how believing in and experiencing anew that power of Christ dwelling within him was “sufficient.” I thought about how the endpoint of a time set aside to be renewed might be a simple gratitude for the gift of ministry and an acknowledgement to keep going with, “OK, I can and want to still do this.” Perhaps it is nothing flashy or exuberant, just a quiet acceptance of “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.”
When reflecting on allowing God to renew us, I appreciated being invited by Ed Smink to review his new and timely book, The Soul of Caregiving, A Caregiver’s Guide to Healing and Transformation. Many know Ed from his previous contributions to NACC prior to his retirement three years ago. Retirement became an opportunity for Ed to put into words many of his experiences as a caregiver and chaplain. Let me quote his introduction to his book:
In reading his book, I too was also reminded of the importance of the skills of caregiving that you, as chaplains, exhibit each day as well as the possibility of being drained by a type of compassion fatigue. Ed’s book engaged me and reminded me of the importance of our needing to be renewed and revived, as it is one of our competencies!
In my endorsement of Ed’s book, I mentioned being reminded of how caregiving requires an openness to my own vulnerability, as one is with another. Facing, understanding, and embracing my own brokenness is not a necessary hurdle to overcome for being an effective caregiver, but, as Ed writes, is the very soul of heroic caregiving. Ed takes us on an incredibly rich and nuanced journey through the ages, evoking the sages of myths, symbols, psychology and spirituality to lead the reader along the redemptive mystery of caregiving and the inevitable call to self-truth and love at the heart of being not an effective but heroic caregiver. If you are looking for a portable and over-time revival, you might consider his “Timeout: A Moment of Reprieve – Time for a stop on the journey” at the end of each chapter where he provides ideal moments for honest self-appraisal and compassion. Also, Ed has agreed to offer the NACC members the opportunity to spend time with him exploring the book with us, its readers, sometime in the fall. https://www.amazon.com/dp/1629671304/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_ep_dp_CYMoBbQE8C99H
So, what will your revival time be like in the coming weeks? I pray you might all experience a Violet moment of sheer ecstasy! However, if it is God’s Spirit entering into you again and setting you on your feet anew, Amen to that. If there is no flash or exuberance, but just a quiet acceptance of “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness,” Amen to that too! If Ed’s book can be a companion for you in the coming months as you reflect on the redemptive mystery of caregiving, Amen to that too!
Blessings on you and your ministry!
David Lichter, D.Min.
Executive Director

7. In Vision: Roots of crisis might lie in spiritual public health
Any solution to the opioid crisis should consider why people resort to drugs in the first place. Chaplain Frank Mächt suspects that thinking in terms of spiritual public health could make a difference — and that chaplains are equipped to do it.
8. NACC Networking Call for July 2018
If you wish to participate on this call and are not already on this particular call list, please contact Ramune Franitza at rfranitza@nacc.org for more information. Time listed is Central Time Zone.
- Thursday, July 26; 3:00 p.m. CT – NACC Palliative/Hospice Networking Call
NACC realizes the value of networking and appreciates members taking time out of their schedules to share and lend support to others who are ministering in the same area.
Unfortunately, the calls lose value if there are few participants, limiting the sharing that could take place. In order for the call to have the most value for participants, we will postpone a call until the next quarter if there are less than 5 participants who have signed up for the call a week prior to its scheduled date.
NACC appreciates the effort it takes to participate and also hears of the value these calls provide our members.
9. NACC now offers NACC members opportunities for online networking!
Welcome! To all members who want to continue the discussion started during network calls, or to discuss topics that need attention when a call is not scheduled, you may now network through an online conversation. Sign into the NACC website with your user name and password. Choose NACC Professional Networking Forums. You will note a list of Forums. Choose the one you are interested in: e.g., Nurse Chaplain Group. You may either choose an existing topic to comment on or begin a new topic discussion by initiating it on this page. This forum will grow as members share thoughts, questions and ideas. Remember that this is a PILOT and any feedback directed to Ramune Franitza at rfranitza@nacc.org will help us make it more user friendly.

At the request of the NACC, last summer Gordon led a book review series of four one-hour webinar sessions which gave members the opportunity to read and process Gordon’s book with him. (The participants purchased the book in advance.) Due to the wide popularity of this series, the NACC and Gordon have arranged to reprise his presentation this summer. The four sessions will cover the content of the six chapters of the book. This series will provide the beginning, learning, and seasoned chaplain an opportunity to refine her/his theory and practice of documentation. Participant cost for these four sessions is $60, which includes all four sessions (but does not include the book – you are responsible for obtaining a copy yourself). This series will provide 10 CEH’s.
