1. Executive Director’s Reflection*
Yesterday, the first reading from Genesis began with, “After the man, Adam, had eaten of the tree, the LORD God called to the man and asked him, ‘Where are you?’ He answered, ‘I heard you in the garden; but I was afraid, because I was naked, so I hid myself.’ ” (Gen. 3:9-10) Did you too notice that Adam never answered God’s question, except that he was hiding? He did not say, “Here I am!” Rather, he explained why he was hiding; he recognized he was naked. He became aware of his condition that he sensed God would not want to see or know about. He did disclose this to God, not knowing where that disclosure would lead in his relationship with God. It was new territory. God pursued his inquiry into how he realized that (which God knew already).
I had not observed this dynamic before to the same degree! Interesting, yes? Then again, that’s me too often also, on both accounts.
On the one account, I too, when I am not prepared to or want to avoid having to answer honestly, will offer some other comment rather than being transparent with what should be said. How many conversations am I involved in where questions are not answered! It makes me examine my “conversations” with God. What I share. What God asks. How I reply.
On the other account, I also become aware of dynamics within me that I am not proud of and am even ashamed about. I wish they were not there. I hope they are not apparent to others or impact others negatively. I want to hide them. Most likely they do affect the people I relate to whether I want them to or not. Like Adam, I need to disclose them to God, regularly in my daily consciousness examen, and, even more importantly, immediately when I become aware of them. Here again, I want to hide them, or hide from them, but to no avail. Maybe I need to hear God ask me often, “Where are you?” Good question to let God ask me, yes?
Do you recognize yourself in these dynamics also?
Blessings,
David Lichter, D.Min.
Executive Director

NACC realizes the value of networking and appreciates members taking time out of their schedules to share and lend support to others who are ministering in the same area. Unfortunately, the calls lose value if there are few participants, limiting the sharing that could take place. We will postpone a call until the next quarter if there are less than 5 participants who have signed up for the call a week prior to its scheduled date.
PLEASE NOTE: The NACC website will offer our members opportunities to log in for online networking in order to stay connected with a group interested in the same issues and ministry, whether it is to continue the discussions that were raised during a call, pose new topics, or add resources. Instructions will be sent out as this benefit becomes available.
