1. Executive Director’s Reflection
Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.” (Mt 28:19-20) Thus ends the Gospel reading from Sunday’s Feast of the Trinity.
Each year we get the opportunity to gaze into the mystery of this circle of love in which we are immersed. As my wife, Jackie, was moving items from her office back to home this past week, one of the icons she brought home was our copy of Andre Rublev’s 1411 icon, The Hospitality of Abraham that had been done for the Trinity Monastery in Russia. Remember the images of the three strangers who mysteriously visit Abraham? (Gn 18:1-15). This beautiful portrayal of a profound mystery is so striking. Do you remember Henri Nouwen’s reflection on it in his book, Behold the Beauty of the Lord: Praying with Icons (pp. 20-22)?
As we place ourselves in front of the icon in prayer, we come to experience a gentle invitation to participate in the intimate conversation that is taking place among the three divine angels and to join them around the table. The movement from the Father toward the Son and the movement of both Son and Spirit toward the Father become a movement in which the one who prays is lifted up and held secure…
We come to see with our inner eyes that all engagements in this world can bear fruit only when they take place within this divine circle… the house of perfect love.
Maybe this week we might be drawn into other conversations that are such circles of love, as we witness a family coming to terms with a terminal illness, or letting go of their loved one. Maybe it will be an interdisciplinary huddle that radiates profound compassion for a patient. Maybe it is in a group exchange of those struggling with their addiction. Maybe it was yesterday, on Memorial Day, as we honored and remembered the many who have died in wars, the antithesis of the lifting up and holding secure the dignity of persons in mutual love, and witnessed many families circling one another in their loss and memories, and in their ongoing deep love for one another. Perhaps, in the silence of your own prayer where the many witnesses of a long day surround you with the message, “Behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”
How can I accept today Nouwen’s invitation to reflect on this Trinity? “We come to see with our inner eyes that all engagements in this world can bear fruit only when they take place within this divine circle… the house of perfect love.”
How do you and I experience today, this week, the “Behold I am with you always?”
Blessings,
David Lichter, D.Min.
Executive Director
2. NACC Board of Directors Approve and Announce NACC 2018-2020 Strategic Plan
At their May 14, 2018, Board of Directors’ meeting, the NACC Board leaders approved our NACC 2018-2020 Strategic Plan. The plan names these strategic priorities: advance the chaplaincy profession with our Strategic Partners, strengthen Catholic pastoral care ministries in collaboration with our Partners in Pastoral Care Ministry, promote chaplaincy as a Church vocation, and develop the organizational capabilities to achieve these priorities. You can view and review our Strategic Plan at www.nacc.org/about-nacc/strategic-plan.
3. In Vision: Informed hope: Chaplains’ powerful tool in the opioid epidemic
Chaplains are in a unique position to address the nation’s current opioid epidemic. In the new issue of Vision, physician Fred Rottnek asks chaplains to use their skills, their connections, and their imagination to help people struggling with addiction, their families, and the community.

4. Thank you to our many members who contributed to the May 19 & 20, 2018, Certification Interviews!
The National Office and many volunteers worked hard to make the May 19 & 20, 2018, certification interviews a success. The interviews were held in four locations: Middletown, CT; Irving, TX; Milwaukee, WI; and Portland, OR. There were at least 99 people involved in interview weekend: 39 applicants, 42 interviewers, 9 Interview Team Educators, 4 Site Coordinators, 1 Certification Commissioner-on-Call, and 4 Pastoral Presence Volunteers as well as Other Volunteers. We very much appreciate all our volunteers’ hard work and dedication to the NACC Certification process! Thank you also for keeping our certification applicants and all those involved in your thoughts and prayers as they prepared for certification interviews and for making the weekend run smoothly.

NACC realizes the value of networking and appreciates members taking time out of their schedules to share and lend support to others who are ministering in the same area. NACC is looking at alternate ways to connect our members, but until then, this quarterly call is a means to that end.
Unfortunately, the calls lose value if there are few participants, limiting the sharing that could take place. In order for the call to have the most value for participants, we will postpone a call until the next quarter if there are less than 5 participants who have signed up for the call a week prior to its scheduled date.
NACC appreciates the effort it takes to participate and also hears of the value these calls provide our members.
