1. Executive Director’s Reflection
Blessings to you all on this Monday after the feast of the Ascension! Did you notice in yesterday’s second reading from Ephesians the prayer for you, and all of us? “May the eyes of your hearts be enlightened, that you may know what is the hope that belongs to his call.” (Eph. 1:18)
The word hope caught my eye again. Did you see or read the California Catholic Conference’s pastoral letter on mental health, dated May 1, 2018, the first day of the National Mental Health Awareness Month? It’s entitled Hope and Healing!
Not far into the letter, it states the Christological and ministerial foundation for this pastoral care. Hope is at the center. It states:
As we reflect upon and continue the healing ministry of Jesus in the name of the Church, we realize that the grace of hope is a core charism of our ministry, is it not?. We embody hope for so many when they feel disconnected, lost, or suffering in endless pain. Thank you for being God’s hope in your ministry!
Last April, in a TED talk, Pope Francis said,
He reminded me of what our NACC leaders captured in 2006 as the Vision of NACC:
This sounds like us, yes? This remains an inspirational and aspirational vision, does it not? I am also exceptionally excited about our NACC 2018-2020 Strategic Plan, as it expresses our being “able to see tomorrow!” In recent months we had a member listening sessions on the draft of the plan. Their feedback was very helpful and encouraging. Now, today, Monday, May 14, 2018, our NACC Board is meeting via conference call to review and finalize it. It embodies hope for us and the profession as we continue to live out a ministry of hope and healing for those in our care!
Finally, you will be receiving this week our letter inviting you to participate in our 2018 Annual Member Campaign. Now that you know why you are receiving a letter from NACC, please don’t toss it in the circular file before reading it! Before praying about the value of and with gratitude for your ministry, our ministry, the Church’s ministry, the healing ministry of Jesus! We are hoping and counting on your ongoing support of the Vision of NACC that you reflect!
And so, I end as I started, “May the eyes of your hearts be enlightened, that you may know what is the hope that belongs to his call.” (Eph. 1:18)
Do you and I know “what is the hope that belongs to his call?”
Blessings,
David Lichter, D.Min.
Executive Director

4. Thank you to our many members who are contributing to the May 19 & 20, 2018, Certification Interviews!
The National Office and many volunteers have been busy completing preparations for the May 19 & 20, 2018, certification interviews. The interviews are being held in Middletown, CT; Irving, TX; Milwaukee, WI; and Portland, OR. There are 100 people involved in the interview weekend: 39 applicants, 42 interviewers, 10 Interview Team Educators (including 2 shadow ITEs), 4 Site Coordinators, 1 Certification Commissioner-on-Call, and 4 Pastoral Presence Volunteers as well as Other Volunteers. We are so thankful for all our volunteers’ hard work and dedication to the NACC Certification process! Please keep our certification applicants, and all those involved in making the weekend a success, in your thoughts and prayers as they prepare for interviews.
5. NACC Networking calls for May and June 2018
If you wish to participate on any of these calls and are not already on that particular call list, please contact Ramune Franitza at rfranitza@nacc.org for information. Times listed are Central Time Zone.
Thursday, May 24; 3 p.m. CT — Palliative Care/Hospice Networking Group
Friday, June 1; 10 a.m. CT — CPE Educators Networking Call Group
Tuesday, June 5; 11 a.m. CT — Behavioral Health Networking Call
Wednesday, June 6; 2 p.m. CT — Nurse Chaplain Networking Call
Thursday, June 28; 1 p.m. CT — Pediatric Networking Group
Thursday, June 28; 3 p.m. CT — Palliative Care/Hospice Networking Group
NACC realizes the value of networking and appreciates members taking time out of their schedules to share and lend support to others who are ministering in the same area.
NACC is looking at alternate ways to connect our members, but until then, this quarterly call is a means to that end.
Unfortunately, the calls lose value if there are few participants, limiting the sharing that could take place. For the call to have the most value for participants, we will postpone a call until the next quarter if there are less than 5 participants who have signed up for the call a week prior to its scheduled date.
NACC appreciates the effort it takes to participate and hears of the value these calls provide our members.

11. CHA Health Progress May-June 2018 Issue dedicated to spiritual care!
Please access the current issue of Health Progress May-June 2018! www.chausa.org/publications/health-progress/current-issue The issue is dedicated to spiritual care. Many of the articles were written by NACC, NAJC, and APC members, along with articles by Tracy Balboni, MD, George Fitchett with our own Allison Delaney, and our Vision Editor, David Lewellen. This is the first issue dedicated to spiritual/pastoral care since the May-June 2009 issue! It is intended to provide an overview of key topics in spiritual care.
12. 2018 volume of Reflective Practice: Formation and Supervision in Ministry is now available!
This year’s, 2018 Reflective Practice theme is “Formation, Supervision and Leadership.” The articles invite readers to view formation and supervision through the lens of leadership studies and prevailing theories of leadership. Featured in this issue are essays by Mary Hess, Tod Bolsinger, Teresa Jefferson-Snorton, and Herbert Anderson, to name just a few. A special forum, called “Chaplain as Prophet,” explores the prophetic nature of chaplaincy and the changing role of the modern chaplain. A section on chaplaincy education features an essay on transference and countertransference in spiritual care, with two thoughtful responses from leaders in ACPE. As usual, this volume includes reviews of an array of contemporary books, the ACPE Theory Paper of the year and an ATFE report on field education in the Black church tradition….and so much more! This volume ends with a theme statement for next year’s issue.
This volume of Reflective Practice, as with previous volumes, is available free online, through http://journals.sfu.ca/rpfs/ A limited number of hard copies are also available for purchase through its web site: www.reflective-practice.org.

- This Wednesday, May 16, valuable webinar and data tools on healthy community measures
The Department of Population Health at NYU School of Medicine, with support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, is releasing the new City Health Dashboard on Wednesday, May 16. This one-stop resource pulls together 36 measures of health, the factors that shape health, and drivers of health equity to help cities leverage the power of data to create healthier and more equitable communities. The City Health Dashboard is unique in that it gives users the ability to view many of its measures, such as access to parks and healthy foods, opioid overdose deaths, income inequality, and chronic absenteeism in schools, at both the city and neighborhood level. Having these data will allow cities to pinpoint neighborhoods within their cities that are experiencing better or worse health outcomes, dig deeper into what is contributing to those differences, and address specific challenges.
Here’s how to help support the launch:
- Tune in for the May 15 launch webinar! This webinar will take you on a tour of the new Dashboard’s innovative features as representatives from RWJF and one of the pilot cities highlight the value-add of this new resource. Register here. https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_twhA6tGDTRGXTDCTbA38cA
- Sign up to participate in City Health Dashboard’s Thunderclap! It takes less than 3 minutes to join! Sign on via this link so that one consistent message in support of healthier, more equitable communities can be simultaneously shared. www.thunderclap.it/projects/69726-city-health-dashboard-launch
- Spread the word using a communications toolkit that makes promotion easy! The toolkit includes social media posts and graphics, newsletter language, and resources such as a one-pager and key messages to help communicate about the Dashboard with your constituents, members, email subscribers, and social networks. The toolkit is available at http://chdb.nptoolkit.org
