1. Executive Director’s Reflection
As our new year also leads us into our Church’s ordinary time cycle, we had last week John’s call of the disciples. And yesterday we had Mark’s call of the disciples (Mark 1:14-20) that presents an urgent and passionate Jesus proclaiming, “This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.”
This takes me back to a statement Karl Rahner made not long after Vatican II in his article on “Church and the World” in his encyclopedia, Sacramentum Mundi (SM 1, 346-57), where he stressed the sacramental nature of the Church and how the Church relates to the world, “in the unity of activity, fraternity (and sorority, sic.), etc. of the world, the Kingdom of God is at hand.” We all know so well how influential Rahner’s theology was on the formulation of both Vatican II documents on the Church, Lumen Gentium and Gaudium et Spes, and his emphasis of the human person, deeply graced, within community, embodying God’s self-communication in love to the world. Or more simply said, “In our daily activity, in our ministry, and in our striving to be a reconciling presence to others, ‘the kingdom is at hand.’ ” We embody God’s nearness and God’s saving grace in and for others, and God’s invitation to more life.
It makes me wonder about how Mark portrayed the immediacy of the first disciples’ responses to Jesus’ invitation to follow. Was it experienced less as a beckoning into an unknown that required sheer abandonment, or was it more like a luring experience of God’s nearness in Jesus that touched these people at their deepest level of hunger for life’s wellspring? They could not live without it…
Well, I am not sure, but I know this beckoning Word is again for me and for you today, “The Kingdom of God is at hand.” I wonder if you and I can live our lives in a way that at times people just sense the luring presence of God in a way that they might be left thinking… “I want/need what he/she has. I want/need more of what I just experienced here.” Can people be smitten in a way that going forth from their encounter with us that they know better what it’s like when God is near to them? Hmmm… Is the Kingdom of God at hand in your and my ministry?
Blessings in your 2018,
David Lichter, D.Min.
Executive Director
