1. Executive Director’s Reflection
Yesterday was the Feast of the Epiphany, with the Gospel being Matthew’s account of the visit of the Magi (Mt 2:1-12). One line stuck out for me, “They were overjoyed at seeing the star, and on entering the house they saw the child with Mary his mother. They prostrated themselves and did him homage.” Mt 2:10-11
This “overjoyed at seeing” brought me back to a paragraph from Rachel Naomi Remen’s Foreword to Making Health Care Whole.
On this feast of the Epiphany, I reflect on each of our ministry situations, whether we are with prisoners, patients, residents, migrants, homeless, or homebound, and realize we are in a “front-row seat on mystery and sitting in that seat with open eyes.” How often am I open to the invitation to where I am “overjoyed at seeing the star” in the one I am with, and be open to that “front-row seat on mystery”? How does my daily practice include cultivating “the capacity to be amazed” at the humanity before me and around me, even in the more dire of situations, and the most ugly of circumstances?
I sometimes think of chaplains as being “seers of the sacred” – those who recognize and point out to others the holy in them and in their midst. Was this not in part the gift of the Magi?
Is this not a core charism of being a spiritual care practitioner? What do you think?
Blessings on your 2018,
David Lichter, D.Min.
Executive Director

4. How do our NACC members learn about NACC?
Recently NACC did a survey of our members who joined us in the past four years. One question was about where they learned about NACC. Here is where they first heard about NACC: 40% CPE, 20% NACC members, 18% their spiritual care department/supervisors, 18% their graduate school, and a few other sources. We deeply appreciate our CPE Certified Educators for their referrals, as well as you, our members, spiritual care department members, and our grad programs! Please continue to promote NACC!
5. A final big THANK YOU to all who contributed to NACC 2017 Annual Campaign!
Once again, we express our gratitude for all who were able to contribute to our 2017 Annual Member Campaign, as well as to all our members who, while not being able to contribute, continue to pray for our NACC mission and all our members. The 2017 year ended with 526 donors contributing $ 61524.50. In 2016 526 donors contributed $ 66,746.77 which had included three major gifts totaling $11,000. Thank you for your generosity.

9. Vision seeks contributions on advance directives
The theme of the March-April Vision will be advance directives, and the ramifications of “having the conversation.” We welcome contributions from members, and would particularly like to hear a story of a patient encounter that might hold lessons for others. The deadline is Feb. 9. Please send an email describing your idea to Vision editor David Lewellen, dlewellen@nacc.org.
10. In Vision: Pack lightly, be flexible, take care of yourself
What happens when a chaplain gets the call from the Red Cross to deploy to a disaster? In the new issue of Vision, Linda Walsh-Garrison describes how she prepares physically, mentally and spiritually to minister to survivors — or to no one at all.
