1. Executive Director’s Reflection*
Do you find yourself often hearing these words of the Lord so personally? “But blessed are your eyes, because they see, and your ears, because they hear. Amen, I say to you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.” (Mt. 13:16-17)
As I reflected on those verses that followed Jesus’ parable of the Sower and the Seed, I could not help but remember the many times I have heard you, our members, express this “blessed are your eyes” when you have shared how deeply privileged you feel to see what you see and to hear what you hear as you care for those God has given to you to be love and compassion. Just last Tuesday on a networking call one of our members practically repeated exactly those words.
I wonder how much being around and with people who are experiencing life’s ultimate questions in the midst of their aging, tragedy, suffering, and uncertainty cannot but make us fertile soil, as it does them, when we are with them. I wonder how much we count on God’s Word to be present and active in their lives, and to hear it for the first time.
It reminded me of a quote attributed to Daniel Berrigan when he was asked about what most attracted him to Dorothy Day, “She lives as though the Truth were actually true.” I don’t know about you, but plenty of Sundays during the Eucharist I find myself thinking, “David, if you really believed what you are hearing and seeing were true, how much more would you be surrendering and living a more hopeful and peaceful life?” I ask myself: “Do I live as though the Truth were really true?”
Do you? Are we truly fertile soil in our ministry?
Blessings,
David Lichter, D.Min.
Executive Director

11. Coming soon, August 3! Our NACC August Webinar on Dementia and Growing Older!*
If you have not already done so, it is still not too late to register for this webinar.
On Thursday, August 3, 2017 – 12:00 noon to 1:30 p.m. Central Time, Sr. M. Peter Lillian Di Maria, O.Carm., BA, LNHA, and Alfred W. Norwood, BS, MBA, will present “Dementia and Growing Older.”
Program Summary
Tapping into one’s Faith belief and understanding a person’s spirituality is a key component to helping those who suffer from different types of dementia. It has been seen that many people with advanced levels of dementia are still comforted by spiritual practices. In this session, Alfred Norwood will discuss dementia and its impact on understanding. Sr. Peter will provide insight on how to identify and provide spirituality for those with a dementia diagnosis.
Program Objectives
1. Discuss the impact of dementia’s progressive, irreversible mental losses on patient behavior.
2. Describe mental processes that remain and can be used to facilitate a “behaviorless” decline for those with dementia.
3. Discuss spirituality of aging as it applies to dementia and discuss spiritual approaches for elders, especially those living with dementia.
About the Presenters
Sr. M. Peter Lillian Di Maria has over 35 years’ experience in the continuum care ministry as a Carmelite Sister for the Aged and Infirm. Sr. Peter has served her community in many administrative positions and has lectured many times on Alzheimer’s disease, palliative care, geriatric spiritual care, family care issues, stress reduction, leadership development, and team building. Sr. Peter has developed successful dementia care programs, dementia care curriculums and assisted in developing a palliative care resource manual that is specific for geriatric care. Over the past fifteen years, Sr. Peter and the Avila Institute of Gerontology have worked with many Congregations concerning aging issues, as well as providing congregational management and education services. She has a BA in Secondary Education and currently holds three state licenses as a Nursing Home Administrator.
Alfred Norwood holds a BS degree and graduate study in Physiological Psychology from Michigan State University and an MBA from the University of Chicago. Upon moving to Rochester, he founded Companion Radio, a satellite service to LTC and Assisted Living facilities. Observing the impending aging care crisis, he formed Behavior Science, Inc., which developed tools and training programs for nursing homes, assisted living and home care agencies. For 15 years he has worked with Sr. Peter at the Avila Institute of Gerontology to help Avila clients better meet the needs of seniors they serve.

Intended audience: chaplains, certified nursing assistants, bereavement counselors, nurses, physicians, social workers, teachers, therapists, volunteers, and all those who “hold it all together” for others.
Overview
Showing up well for others when they are hurting can feel like a daunting task. Holding space with others doesn’t require words, platitudes or clichés. In fact, just being present with others and finding a comfortable space within ourselves to just BE with them is the best thing we can do. However well we process our own pain is exactly how well we will be able to respond to the pain of others. We need our own sacred spaces when the time comes that the-one who-holds-it-all-together-for-others needs someone to hold space for them. In this talk, keynote speaker Rev. Dr. Carla Cheatham will discuss the process of “holding space” to create the environment for transformation that flows from the stories of patients, our colleagues and ourselves.
Objectives:
- Describe the process and five benefits of holding space.
- Identify three steps in the spiritual process of transformation.
- Analyze the role of re-storying and disillusionment in that process of transformation.
- Incorporate into practice an awareness of the four roles struggle can play in transformation.
