1. Executive Director’s Reflection
Yesterday was the Feast of Corpus Christi, Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ. For some believers, it is considered a more antiquated feast because it draws attention to the elements of the Eucharist, the bread and wine, rather than the act of the Eucharist, the act of Christ’s giving himself for the world, and our acts of gathering, giving thanks, receiving and becoming what we receive, Christ for the world. Yet, there is a mystery here that evokes some reflection for me, for us.

The Sequence – Lauda Sion contains many eloquent poetic statements. Here are three that touched me; I highlighted the phrases that drew me.

Here beneath these signs are hidden
Priceless things to sense forbidden;
Signs, not things are all we see:

Blood is poured and flesh is broken,
Yet in either wondrous token
Christ entire we know to be.

When the sacrament is broken,
Doubt not, but believe ’tis spoken,
That each sever’d outward token
doth the very whole contain.

I might have shared with you in the past something I reflect upon when I approach to receive the Eucharist. I continue to consider this…

Isn’t it amazing that among all the pieces of bread or hosts on the paten or plate that one is chosen for me/you and I am/you are saying Amen to this morsel of Mystery, then from the chalice or cup taking a sip of the Sacred? That somehow in this act we are admitting that in this chosen morsel and single sip Christ is present in His entirety and all. That Our Lord of all in His All in All has just been received, promising that I am becoming what I received? Isn’t that remarkable!

Then, my mind goes to my/our daily life and the many moments, like that morsel and sip, I am offered to recognize anew Our Lord of all in His All in All being offered again in this chosen patient/resident/family or that specific associate before me. Somehow I am invited again to say Amen to this moment of mystery, as I did to that morsel and sip, Christ no less present in this person – before me in his/her flesh and blood. Isn’t that remarkable? What is my response?

What a mystery we have been given in our Eucharist! “Here beneath these signs are hidden
Priceless things to sense forbidden; Signs, not things are all we see…”

What do you see? What difference does it make in our lives, our ministry?

Blessings,

David Lichter, D.Min.
Executive Director

2. Thank you to the early donors to the 2017 Annual Campaign!
Many members have already responded generously to our 2017 Annual Campaign. To date we have received 220 gifts totaling $22,858, compared to 247 gifts totaling $25,210 at this time last year. We are most appreciative!

Please note: If you misplaced your Annual Campaign envelope, please contact Phil (pparadowski@nacc.org) for a new one. Also, you can make your donation online by going to the Annual Campaign webpage (www.nacc.org/donate) or just click here to donate https://nationalcatholicwiassoc.wliinc32.com/forms/donation.aspx. Please give as you can! Blessings!

He will also do some teaching on Pastoral Care with Survivors of Trauma, the subject of his DMin project just completed at Catholic Theological Union.

4. See recent book review on “ars moriendi” in Vision
Can the medieval practice of “ars moriendi” be applied to modern-day hospice and palliative care settings? In the current issue of Vision, NACC reviewer John Gillman considers a book by Carlo Leget that attempts to make the case.

5. Death of a member
We learned of the recent death of our NACC member, Sr. Stephanie Morales, FMI, who died on June 2, 2017, in San Antonio, TX. Sr. Stephanie joined NACC in 1990, and was certified in 1991. She remained an NACC member until her death. We commend her to the Lord with gratitude for her many years of continuing the healing ministry of Jesus in the name of the Church.

14. CHA asks us to join in their advocacy efforts regarding the ACA.
The Catholic Health Association has contacted us, urging us to invite your participation in contacting your congressional representatives regarding the repeal and replace of the ACA.

Dear Ministry Colleague:
As you have probably heard, the Senate is moving closer to formulating legislation to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act (ACA). CHA has strongly opposed the House-passed American Health Care Act (AHCA), and the most recent analysis of that bill has done nothing to lessen the harm it will do to millions of Americans who have gained coverage under the ACA and who rely on the Medicaid program. It is critical that all senators hear the opposition to the House AHCA bill, that it is unfixable, and the need for the Senate to start over to fix the ACA.

Please contact your senators now to protect health coverage for 23 million individuals and especially those on the Medicaid program, which serves the most vulnerable low-income children, pregnant woman, families, and elderly and disabled individuals.

We also strongly encourage you to forward this message to your colleagues and urge them to contact their senators. We need an outpouring of opposition. A sample letter, background materials and talking points are available here.

Please note: modify the draft letter where indicated to include your role — nurse, doctor, employee, patient, board member — in the organization to illustrate the broad reach of our opposition message.

Thank you for your attention to this urgent request, and thank you for everything you do to provide and preserve health care for everyone.

15. News of note
