Theology of Self-Care

July 2010 Audio Conference
Presented by Elizabeth Berne DeGear, Ph.D. cand., BCC and Mary Winters, R.N.

Session 1 – July 22, 2010: Presentation (part one)
1.5 Continuing Education Hours

Session 2 – July 29, 2010: Presentation (part two)
1.5 Continuing Education Hours

About the Presenters:
Chaplain Elizabeth Berne DeGear focuses on the intersection between religion and psychology. During her time as chaplain at Mary Immaculate Hospital, Elizabeth instituted a self-care program for the nursing staff. She has a Masters of Arts in Religion and Religious Education from Fordham University and she is a PhD candidate in Psychology and Religion at Union Theological Seminary, with a focus on Hebrew Scripture. Her vocation includes being mother to her four year-old daughter and two year-old son.

Mary Winters, RN has been working in healthcare for over thirty years. Her wide range of experience has brought her to hospital and hospice settings, working as nurse, administrator, and chaplain. Most recently she has been developing hospice programs in nursing homes and hospitals in New York City. She currently companions individuals as a spiritual director in Manhattan. She has a Masters of Science in Nursing Administration and a Masters of Arts in Religion and Religious Education from Fordham University. Mary and Lizzie met during a unit of CPE in New York City which began the day after September 11, 2001.

In this two-part audio conference participants will be introduced to new perspectives on self care.
Teaching Objectives:

  • Grounding our understanding of self-care in Catholic theology
  • Defining the terms “self” and “care” in a theological context
  • Offering tools to determine what constitutes self-care for each of us
  • Distinguishing ways of “being religious” that are self-care from ways of “being religious” that undermine care of ourselves (and hence our care of others)

Program Information:
The audio conferences will begin promptly at 1:00 p.m. Central Time and conclude at
2:00 p.m. Central Time. Participants will receive presentation materials one week in advance in order to prepare for the presentation. Elizabeth and Mary began the two sessions with a presentation, followed by facilitated participant exchange.

The participants qualify for up to 3 CEHs for the two sessions.
