Overview and Objectives
The issue of ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences) was known before the Pandemic hit the world. And it seems Covid added to the already growing problem of people who are suffering due to trauma in is various forms. The presentation will look at trauma as the new face of original sin and walk people through both a theological, pastoral and academic exploration of these issues.
Sacred Story Institute is engaged in a major project on trauma’s impact on belief and faith practice that will culminate with a webinar on November 2nd, 2023 with Gabor Mate. Mate is the author of several books on trauma and is a close personal friend of Fr. Watson. The goal of the November webinar is to raise the profile of trauma as a challenge to faith belief and practice. The NACC presentation will give attendees a overview of the topic in its various manifestations.
As a result of this webinar, participants will:
- Examine their own lives for evidence of trauma
- Understand where they stand on the ACEs scale
- Examine personal challenges to relationships due to trauma
- Provide a framework for Catholic chaplains to better understand the issue of trauma and how to help people who so suffer

Presenter Information
Fr. Bill Watson, S.J. is the president and founder of the Sacred Story Institute (sacredstory.net). SSI specializes in building enduring Ignatian-based programs that stand the test of time. In Fr. Bill’s early days, he founded the Encounter program at Jesuit High School in Portland, Oregon. That program turned 44 in 2023 and has transformed the school. The Five-Day Ignatian Retreat at Georgetown University turned 36 and the Georgetown Freshman ESCAPE turned 32 in 2023. Prior to SSI, Fr. Bill has worked as Director of Retreat Programs at Georgetown University; Vice-President for Mission at Gonzaga University and Provincial Assistant for International Ministries where he assisted the development of regional sustainable development projects between the apostolates of the Oregon Province and the Colombian Province. He is a specialist on the Ignatian Examen and Spiritual Discernment.
