Program Overview
Session 1 (October 14) provides the biblical foundations of parables, an exploration of the meaning of the kingdom of God in the Gospels, and the location of the parables in the Synoptic Gospels as well as the centrality of their importance and function in Jesus’ teaching.
Session 2 (October 21) offers sample parables particularly from Luke and show how these can be used in the pastoral care of those confronting illness, loss and death.
The participants qualify for up to 3 CEHs for the two sessions.
Objectives
1. To examine the Biblical foundations for the parables and locate Jesus’ parables in the Synoptic Gospels.
2. To demonstrate the power of story-telling using the parables as an example of Jesus’ approach to changing people’s minds and hearts. What are some implications of the observation that parables are presented as Jesus’ typical way of teaching?
3. To study sample parables that offer a faith vision on human suffering and death
4. To show how parables lift the veil on the mystery of the reign of God present in a broken world and reveal a glimpse of realities quite different from the accepted values of this world. The parables challenge us to a new way of being, thinking and acting.
5. To encourage ministers to adopt a “realized eschatology” mentality such as can be found in the parables, not only in ministering to patients and family members at a time of personal loss and crisis, but as characteristic of the gospel mission.
