Prerequisites for Certification Application

Graduate Degree Equivalency
Graduate Degree Equivalency may be applied for if the Applicant has completed graduate-level theological coursework yet has not been conferred a Master’s Degree in one of the required disciplines. Click here for application documents.
CPE Equivalency
An equivalency is the demonstrated and documented ability to meet the competency Standards for the NACC which have been acquired in a way other than those specified in the Standards. An equivalency for one unit of CPE may be sought. Details about this are provided on the CPE Equivalency Procedure page.
CPE Programs
A minimum of four units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) is required for certification with the National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC). More information on CPE and links to directories of CPE Programs may be found on the CPE Programs and Education page.
Graduate Programs
NACC applicants must have a completed graduate-level Theological Degree in theology, divinity, religious studies, pastoral ministry, pastoral studies, or spirituality from an accredited academic institution. Suggested programs are located on this page.
Mentors
We recommend that you find a mentor that you would like to work with. They should be Board Certified with the NACC (BCC or BCC-E) and be familiar with the current procedures. We do not facilitate a mentor relationship. You will find more information on the Mentors page.
