Advancing Chaplaincy: Volunteer of the Month for Nov/Dec 2007

Note: Every month, the NACC is choosing one volunteer at random to honor for their contributions to the association. Volunteer of the Month is a feature in Vision and is based on our publishing schedule. The current Vision, November/December 2007, is a double issue. Because of this two volunteers have been chosen: Tim Serban and Agustin Orosa.

Name:

Agustin Relagio Orosa Junior, also known as “Jojo”

Work:

Chaplain and CPE Supervisor at Alexian Village of Milwaukee, WI

NACC member since:

1997

Volunteer service:

I have been a member of the Certification Commission since 2005

Favorite book:

I like reading books on human development, group processes, and family systems. Thus, I like reading the books of Richard Rohr, Palmer Parker, Murray Bowen, etc.

Favorite spiritual resource:

For the past few years, I have been doing a lot of hiking and biking (long rides up to 100 miles in one day). Every time I bike or hike, it clears my mind and I feel closer to my God.

Favorite movie:

Dead Poets’ Society

Favorite retreat spot:

I used to spend my weekends at Durward’s Glen, (not to pray but to just to go away from the busy-ness of my work) in Merrimac, WI.

Personal mentor or role model:

Rev. Eugene Leffingwell, my former CPE training supervisor who became one of my closest friends.

Famous/historic mentor or role model:

The late Senator Benigno (Ninoy) Aquino. Ninoy was assassinated and his death led to the downfall of the Marcoses in the Philippines in the mid-1980s.

Why did you become a chaplain?

By accident, I guess. I remember vividly that when I was a little boy, I hated the smell of the hospital. My affiliation with the Order of Saint Camillus led to discovery of my compassion and deep desire to serve the sick.

What do you get from NACC?

Sense of community and belongingness

Why do you volunteer?

I want to expand my network and support system as a chaplain/CPE supervisor.

What have you learned from volunteering?

I am always amazed by the generosity and kindness of other volunteers.
