Executive Director’s Reflection

As you know, our NACC mission statement ends with the phrase, “continue the healing ministry of Jesus in the name of the Church.” My column in the September/October Vision reflected on that topic. I will use this reflection to tell you about the recent mailing sent to our bishops explaining our board certification process and their endorsement of our priests and lay members.

I met with the NACC Episcopal Advisory Council on November 16, 2010. The Council members were sent in advance both a copy of my column mentioned above, and materials on the NACC board certification process and the USCCB/CCA approved NACC standards. I asked them to think with us about how to better communicate with our bishops about the NACC and the meaning and importance of their endorsement. We had a very good conversation. They encouraged me to prepare a letter to be sent to the bishops, and they would review and comment on it before having it sent. What I valued greatly was their willingness to review the letter so that it communicated well what we needed to say, and their support for the letter which is mentioned in the letter’s content.

In early January I sent them a draft of the letter and attachments, and heard back from several of them supporting the letter’s content. I especially appreciated the guidance and support of Archbishop Paul Coakley during that time, knowing he was very involved in completing his responsibilities as Bishop of Salina, Kansas, and preparing for his installation as Archbishop of Oklahoma City.

You can link to the letter and attachments that were sent on February 11th, World Day of the Sick. The two most important points of this letter, I believe, are: 1. sharing again what education and training a person needs to become board certified by NACC and that the NACC “is intended to provide an assurance that our board certified members are prepared for this specialized ministry and will represent the Church;” and 2. what their endorsement means. We created separate documents about the expectations of board certification so that the bishop can also keep this for further reference.

For the most part, our bishops have been very supportive of the process with their endorsement letter, and many add special comments of appreciation for the person seeking endorsement. Very few refuse to endorse because they conceptually disagree with the process. We continue to seek dialogue where we can. The NACC will also continue to work with its Episcopal Advisor, Archbishop Paul Coakley, and the Episcopal Advisory Council, to identify ways to keep the bishops informed about our ministry that “continues the healing ministry of Jesus in the name of the Church.”

I encourage all of us to reread my column in the September-October issue of Vision, especially the last section where I offered some ways to be in contact with your local ordinary who endorses you, if you are a layperson, a diocesan priest or deacon. I believe we cannot be proactive enough in making contact with our local bishops even if you are a member of a religious community/order and receive your endorsement from your major superior or provincial. Perhaps, you might want to follow-up this communication to the bishops with setting an appointment, individually or as a group, to meet with him, even for 15 minutes, and express the gift your ministry is to you, and what you are doing?

I always appreciate your feedback to these reflections. What are your thoughts on what I have shared? In particular, please share ways you have built a relationship with your local ordinary or his designee, so we can share them with other members.

Appreciatively,
David A. Lichter, D.Min.
Executive Director

NACC Episcopal Liaison installed as Archbishop of Oklahoma City

On February 11th, World Day of the Sick, our NACC Episcopal Liaison, Bishop Paul Coakley, was installed as Archbishop of Oklahoma City. Archbishop Coakley had been bishop of Salina, Kansas, and began his term as our NACC Episcopal Liaison this past November 2011. He will be coming to our NACC 2011 Conference in Milwaukee and presiding at the Eucharist when our newly certified members are received and missioned. To view his installation ceremony go to www.pdcproductions.com/AOC/index.html.
NACC extended to him our prayers and support as he assumes his new appointment.

Planning for 2012 Conference

We are beginning of the process of planning our 2012 conference, which we hope to be a symposium-style conference around the theme of “forgiveness.” If you have an interest in participating as a member of our planning task force, please email Susanne at schaw@nacc.org.

Are you interested in becoming a CPE Supervisor?

Over the past months we have had some inquiries about the process for becoming a CPE Supervisor with the NACC. We would like to provide a conference call for any member who has been considering CPE Supervision. The call will provide background on the requirements, process, and our discussions with ACPE so that we can assist you in your discernment and preparation. We want to set this call in March. If interested or have questions, please contact David Lichter (dlichter@nacc.org).

Fifty-six applicants scheduled for interview April 30/May 1, 2011

On the basis of their pastoral work and written materials, we are excited to announce there are fifty-six applicants scheduled to meet with an interview team for Chaplain Certification on April 30/May 1, 2011. This is largest number in several years!

• Increased Number of Interview Sites
Because of a significantly higher response for Chaplaincy Certification with the NACC, it was essential to increase our traditional four interview sites, up to the following seven interview sites to accommodate our rather large group:

• Interviewer Training
Over the next two months, we will be training Certification Interviewers. Their inspiring dedication and tremendous example to participate as a volunteer is an immense contribution to the certification process.

• Mentoring
If you are without a Spring 2011 volunteer assignment, we would invite you to perhaps consider participating as a Mentor if you are contacted by an Applicant seeking a Mentor. Applicants for certification are continually seeking an NACC Active Board Certified Chaplain or CPE Supervisor for mentoring during the preparation of their materials.

• Contact Person for Certification
If you have any questions regarding the certification process, please contact Rose Mary Blanco-Alvarado (“Mar-“), Administrative Specialist/Certification, at the NACC National Office at (414) 483-4898 ext. 308.

We welcome our December 2010 and January 2011 new members to NACC!

We warmly welcome to NACC our high number of new members who joined us in December 2010 and January 2011! Click here to see all new members who have joined us in 2010 and 2011!

NACC Retreat pre-conference 2011

Don’t forget to sign up for our pre-conference retreat, Friday, May 20, 2011 -- “We are a Pilgrim People.” Chaplains are on their own on-going personal/spiritual journeys. People and communities in the past, including our ancestors in faith, have in some way assisted them to respond authentically and genuinely to the call to serve others who are on their own unique journeys through life. This day of reflection will provide the opportunity for participants to reflect on the Paths, People and Communities that have been instrumental and/or significant in their lives assisting them to better appreciate how they have responded to their baptismal call to be of service to others through the unique ministry of chaplaincy. In addition, participants will have the opportunity to reflect on how Sacred Scripture continues to form and inform one’s life journey. Our facilitator is Barbara Schauer, D.Min., retired Director of Pastoral Formation at Saint Francis Seminary in Milwaukee, WI.

Have you seen the article on Fr. Bryan Massingale, one of our plenary speakers?

How are you using the Standards of Practice for Professional Chaplains?

Our member, Leszek Baczkura, seeks advice from NACC members regarding their efforts to integrate the Standards of Practice for Professional Chaplains in Acute Care Settings (www.spiritualcarecollaborative.org/standards_of_practice.asp) into either their job descriptions or evaluative processes. Resurrection Health Care has been working on a detailed description/explanation of each standard and added the ERD’s to Standard 5. They are considering how best to utilize these in their job descriptions and/or evaluative processes. Please contact Leszek Baczkura (lbaczkura@Reshealthcare.org). If there are several members interested in discussing this topic, the NACC will gladly arrange a conference call as well.

Are you aware of special conference calls that are held?

For the past two years, the NACC has been offering sixty minute conference calls for those serving in Palliative/Hospice Care and in Long Term Care, as well as for the 40ish and Under Group and for Deacons. If you have not been participating on these calls and would like to, please contact Cindy Bridges (cbridges@nacc.org) to let her know which one. We are planning to set those calls for 2011 by the end of January.

Are you planning to give any presentations on chaplaincy?
