Yesterday’s gospel for the second Sunday of Lent was Luke’s story of Jesus’ transfiguration. We often hear it interpreted as Jesus providing some type of experience to His closest disciples that gave them an intimate insight into who Jesus really is and the ultimate triumph that would be His after He endures suffering and death – glimpse of glory, so to speak. We have been instructed that since they “kept silence and told no one in those days anything of what they had seen,” that it was only after the resurrection that the experience did make sense to them. This point certainly helps us appreciate that we can have experiences and miss the meaning until later in life.
T.S. Eliot, in “The Dry Salvages” in number three of his Four Quartets, beautifully reflected on this reality, and perhaps offers us a little more to reflect on. He observes,
It seems, as one becomes older,
That the past has another pattern, and ceases to be a mere sequence—
Or even development: the latter a partial fallacy
Encouraged by superficial notions of evolution,
Which becomes, in the popular mind, a means of disowning the past.
The moments of happiness—not the sense of well-being,
Fruition, fulfillment, security or affection,
Or even a very good dinner, but the sudden illumination—
We had the experience but missed the meaning,
And approach to the meaning restores the experience
In a different form, beyond any meaning
We can assign to happiness. I have said before
That the past experience revived in the meaning
Is not the experience of one life only
But of many generations—not forgetting
Something that is probably quite ineffable:
The backward look behind the assurance
Of recorded history, the backward half-look
Over the shoulder, towards the primitive terror.
He goes further with his reflections that help us link our individual suffering to the suffering of the world and generations that has an indelible and enduring effect on us
Now, we come to discover that the moments of agony
(Whether, or not, due to misunderstanding,
Having hoped for the wrong things or dreaded the wrong things,
Is not in question) are likewise permanent
With such permanence as time has. We appreciate this better
In the agony of others, nearly experienced,
Involving ourselves, than in our own.
For our own past is covered by the currents of action,
But the torment of others remains an experience
Unqualified, unworn by subsequent attrition.
People change, and smile: but the agony abides.
It makes me wonder if, in some way for the disciples, Jesus’ agony and torment were a permanent, abiding experience for them of God’s intimacy – “this is my beloved.” As they moved from being bystanders to sharers in His agony, did Jesus’ agony become for them “not the experience of one life only, but of many generations?” It makes me wonder if, in the midst of our ministry with those who experience the “moments of agony,” our standing in faith with them and believing in God’s intimacy with that person/family is part of the way they are able to experience their agony as “not the experience of one life only, but of many generations?” Is somehow my presence and the presence of their families/friends with them in the moment of suffering intimating, not perceptively, but in grace, that it is God embracing them and who will “transfigure” them not by taking away this singular moment of agony but making it a part of the generations of human agony – an agony Christ transformed by passionate undergoing it Himself?
What are your thoughts about this? How does the transfiguration speak to you this Lent?
Appreciatively,
David A. Lichter
Executive Director
Last fall, NACC conducted its Board of Directors election process via an online voting with Votenet.com, a reputable national firm. We heard many positive comments about its convenience, clarity, and ease from those who voted. However, since our percentage of voting dropped from a 38 percent to 29 percent, we need help finding out why and how we can improve the process. If you did not vote, could you click here and complete a very brief, anonymous questionnaire? Please help us. Thank you. If you want to contact David Lichter (dlichter@nacc.org) directly to give your reasons, please do.
Would you consider being a leadership mentor? The Care Services Task Force has recently made available Spiritual Leadership Competencies for those who have been given or are aspiring to pastoral care leadership responsibilities. Are there NACC members who would consider being a mentor for other NACC members? Please let David Lichter (dlichter@nacc.org) know if you would be open to consider being a mentor. Click here for questions and answers regarding mentoring.
Look for Member Ethics Statement with your membership application or renewalUpon the recommendation of the NACC Board of Directors, all NACC members, whether you are becoming a new member or renewing your current membership, will now be asked to acknowledge by your signature that you have familiarized yourself with and agree to abide by the NACC Code of Ethics found in the NACC Standards for Ethics, Certification, and Renewal of Certification, Part Two, Section 100, Code of Ethics for Spiritual Care Professionals. Please note that this is a different statement than the Ethics Accountability Statement signed for certification and renewal of certification. Our NACC membership application now has a statement on this, and with your membership renewal notice you will be receiving a form to read, sign, and return with your membership renewal form. Thank you in advance for responding to this request.
Seeking NACC Certified Members for Certification InterviewsWe are looking for members to train to be certification interviewers for this coming fall. Interviews will be held October 2-3, 2010. If you are attending the 2010 conference in St. Paul, there is an opportunity to receive training on Saturday, March 20, 2010 at our special NACC workshop. Please see the conference brochure for details. With the growth of male applicants for certification, we are especially seeking certified male NACC members to train to be interviewers. Our tentative locations for the fall are Portland, OR; Milwaukee, WI; Boston, MA; and St. Louis, MO. Please contact Susanne at schaw@nacc.org if you are interested or have questions.
2010-Renewal of Certification ApplicationsRenewal Reminder Letters were mailed to those members due to renew their certification by 12/31/2010.
Thank you to members who submitted 2010 Renewal of Certification Applications early. For those of you working on your Renewal of Certification Application and materials, please note there is still time to submit. Items received by March 1, 2010 will be reviewed at our March 2010 Certification Commission meeting.

If you have an interest in sharing, please contact Karen Gorski, Pastoral Care Coordinator, Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital, Wyandotte, MI., at kgorski1@comcast.net.
