What struck me about yesterday’s liturgical readings was the juxtaposing of God’s nearness/intimacy with human distancing. Jeremiah (1:4-5, 17-19) has God assuring Jeremiah of God’s nearness/intimacy, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I dedicated you,” while announcing a role that would create human distancing, “a prophet to the nations I appointed you.” The trusting tenderness of Psalm 71, “On you I depend from birth; from my mother’s womb you are my strength,” is set against the Psalms cry, “Rescue me from the hand of the wicked!” Paul’s musing in 1 Corinthians 13 on the all-encompassing qualities of love’s nearness, precedes the dismissive distancing of Jesus’ hometown folk in Luke 4, “They rose up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town had been built, to hurl him down headlong.”
Is that true in your ministry? Does the experience of people’s distancing draw you to God’s nearness? Or does at times God’s nearness/intimacy precede, almost as a prelude to, and an assurance in the face of, human distancing because of your ministry? What do you think?
Haiti
Thank you for your responses on Haiti and your sharing with one another on how you are individually or your place of employment is responding to Haiti’s plight. Tim Serban, our NACC liaison to the American Red Cross, reflects below on Haiti, and comments, “The greater tragedy could be if the media gets tired of it, or if there is some rationalizing of the public.” Fortunately, that has not happened yet. Let’s continue to keep each other informed, and to seek ideas from each other! Number 2 in this NACC Now provides you with information on who has shared so far. Number 3 shares the most recent ARC update from Earl Johnson.
You and your NACC state members!
How well are you doing at coming to know your other state members? In the past two weeks we have had teleconference calls with our NACC State Liaisons. It was very helpful to hear what many of them are planning for events during 2010. However, some core concerns were raised that were very important. While we have some state liaisons who have been able to stay connected with their other state members via e-mails, several liaisons seek ways to improve getting to know and be known by their other state members. One obvious oversight was that they were never formally introduced by NACC to their state members! When you go to our NACC website you will find a page that includes who the State Liaisons are, what their roles are, resources for planning local gatherings, and other items. If you click on their name, you have their e-mail address. If you click on the state, you go to a state web-page waiting to be filled with news, names, photos, and any other items. These are ready to be used by you. Soon you will find there a photo and brief bio on your State Liaison as well.
If you recall, it was at our NACC Conference 2008 in Indianapolis that we inaugurated the state liaison idea. At the conference, members volunteered to be the first state liaisons. We were able to get volunteers for all but a handful of states. Thank you! I cautioned at the time that this would be a “work in progress” as we launched the liaison role with just three words: connect, communicate, coordinate. They would connect to our NACC staff, as they would be the ones we e-mail with names of NACC members in their state, contact when someone in their state expresses interest in chaplaincy and wants to speak with a chaplain about their career, or other items regarding members in their state. They would communicate with their state members on items of interest, upcoming events, how to approach future gatherings. They also would coordinate (and not necessarily do all the planning for!) the planning for local or regional gatherings. We are so grateful to the liaisons for ‘jumping into the deep end” and for helping to shape this new role! Through the leadership of these liaisons, we have been able to host 20+ local gatherings in both 2008 and 2009!
In future NACC Now’s we will devote more time to ways you can connect with your liaison and get to know your other state, perhaps just your city, NACC members.
Appreciatively,
David Lichter, D.Min.
Executive Director
In the prior NACC Now, we invited members to let us know about their relief efforts and share resources both to encourage one another, as well as to learn different ways to respond. Many of you responded. You can access responses on the NACC website at www.nacc.org/resources/emergency/haiti.asp. If you want to add your efforts, please let Phil Paradowski know at pparadowski@nacc.org. We continue to hold the Haitians in prayer, as relief efforts grow.
Updates on Haiti from American Red Cross demonstrating outcomes in spiritual careTim Serban, our NACC member and member of the American Red Cross’ Spiritual Care Response Team (SRT), offered some personal reflections on Haiti after the prior NACC Now. You can read them at www.nacc.org/resources/emergency/haiti.asp.
By arrangement with the SRT, NACC members can also read the latest update of Earl Johnson’s American Red Cross (ARC) January 2010 E-SRT Newsletter (as well as older newsletters). To read the update, go to this page to log in.
Please look for a Member Ethics Statement with your membership application or membership renewalUpon the recommendation of the NACC Board of Directors, all NACC members, whether you are becoming a new member or renewing your current membership, will now be asked to acknowledge by your signature that you have familiarized yourself with and agree to abide by the NACC Code of Ethics found in the NACC Standards for Ethics, Certification, and Renewal of Certification, Part Two, Section 100, Code of Ethics for Spiritual Care Professionals. Please note that this is a different statement than the Ethics Accountability Statement signed for certification and renewal of certification. Our NACC membership application now has a statement on this, and with your membership renewal notice you will be receiving a form to read, sign, and return with your membership renewal form. Thank you in advance for responding to this request.
NACC State Liaisons – an invaluable resource for youDo you know your NACC State Liaison? Have you recently connected with her/him? Go to www.nacc.org/volunteers/state_reps.asp to learn who he/she/they are. They are the ones who help our NACC office connect to you, who work to facilitate communication among our state members, and who help coordinate local gatherings. Introduce yourself to them; offer to help them in their role. Also, will you consider being a state liaison? Several states are now in need of a new liaison. What is expected of the liaison can be found at the link above. Please contact Cindy Bridges (cbridges@nacc.org) for more information.
How can I get involved with NACC?In the Executive Director’s Column in the January-February Vision, David Lichter reflected on the many ways members have and can contribute to the vibrancy of NACC. This is your association, and its life and value comes through the exchanges among you as members! We are sometimes asked, “How is NACC structured?” We are an organically, evolving entity! Go to www.nacc.org/aboutnacc/NACC_Now_activity.asp for a way of visualizing NACC now! Want more ways of assisting? Contact Cindy Bridges (cbridges@nacc.org).

American Red Cross SRT Training – NACC Conference 2010The American Red Cross Spiritual Care Response Team (SRT) is an integral part of the ARC Critical Response Team and is deployed following aviation and other transportation disasters, mass casualties, WMD/Terrorism events, and by government request. The NACC in conjunction with the American Red Cross is happy once again to offer training at the 2010 NACC Conference. The training begins at 8:00 am on Friday, March 19, 2010, and 7:00 am on Saturday, March 20, 2010. Participants are required to attend both days. This training is offered free of charge, although all accepted participants are responsible for their own training and maintenance. Given the limited class size and necessity for a formal application process, we cannot guarantee that every request to attend will be able to be honored. Members in good standing may apply. Therefore, it is imperative that you submit your application prior to February 14, 2010 – the deadline has been extended. For an application and specific requirements, please contact Susanne Chawszczewski at schaw@nacc.org. If and when the SRT would deploy to Haiti, this ARC disaster training would be essential for this and any future disaster in terms of its impact.
The NACC was grateful to have worked closely with the leaders of several Catholic health systems to help plan the 2010-2012 Spiritual Care Champions System. All NACC members are invited to participate.
