So what does the new decade hold for the ministry of pastoral care? For health care? As I made my short-term to do list, and set priorities for the first quarter of 2010, I am so aware of how the “unknowns” play critical roles in our futures. Recently a father who lost a daughter in 9-11 left no doubt that 9-11 was the defining event of the first decade of the 21st century. I agree with him. What “unknown” event(s) will shape the second decade?
As we enter the new year/decade, I am grounded in and guided by NACC priorities I wrote about in the July/August 2009 Vision (www.nacc.org/vision/July_Aug_2009/ed.asp) and refined by the NACC board at their September 2009 meeting and presented by Barbara Brumleve, PhD, SSND, our NACC board chair, in her November/December 2009 Vision Column, “Get in on NACC’s Elevator Talk.” (www.nacc.org/vision/Nov_Dec_2009/brumleve.asp) Please review these, and provide me any comments/counsel on any strategies you might envision to help us meet these priorities. Any priorities missing?
My prayer for all of us is that we enter the new year/decade with a trust and courage, and a contagious abandonment to God’s will, as we dwell in the daily-ness of our lives, noticing and relishing the gifts of God’s presence, yet are driven by our common mission to continue the healing ministry of Jesus in the name of the Church!
Last week, our NACC member, Ed Horvat, sent me his January 2010 Diversity Calendar he sends to his staff. To begin the calendar he offered the following reflection from Ed Hays. As we enter this new year/decade together, I “re-gift” the reflection to you.
New Wineskins
Comfortable and well-worn are my daily paths
whose edges have grown gray
with constant use.
My daily speech is a collection of old words
worn down at the heels
by repeated use.
My language and deeds, addicted to habit,
prefer the taste of old wine,
the feel of weathered skin.
Come and awaken me, Sprit of the new.
Come and refresh me, Creator of green life.
Come and inspire me, You who make all things new:
I am too young to be dead,
to be stagnant in spirit.
Set my feet to fresh paths this day:
inspire me to speak original and life-giving words
and to creatively give shape to the new.
From Prayers for a Planetary Pilgrim by Ed Hays
In the coming weeks, we will be seeking candidates for new members of our NACC Board of Directors, Commissions, and Panels. We need you to consider providing leadership to NACC. Your leadership starts in small ways, and can be exercised in a variety of ways. Please read David Lichter’s Executive Director column in the January-February 2010 Vision to learn more about your leadership and NACC.
Please let us know of your address changes!Over the past weeks, more mail is being returned to the NACC office because of outdated addresses. We are charged for returned mail, and we then need to contact you for a current address. Help us be good stewards of our NACC resources! Please notify us right away of address changes. E-mail Mary Pawicz (mpawicz@nacc.org) with your changes. Thank you!

Seeking Items for the Silent Auction – NACC 2010 ConferenceWe had wonderful success with a silent auction at our NACC 2008 National Conference thanks to the initiation and leadership of Linda Piotrowski. Thank you again, Linda! We invite members to bring to the 2010 Conference handmade or other types of items, including items from your institution, for our silent auction to be held at the conference. Share your talents and gifts to benefit other members! Proceeds will go towards conference scholarships. If you are interested in contributing an item, please contact Susanne at schaw@nacc.org.
American Red Cross SRT Training – NACC 2010 ConferenceThe American Red Cross Spiritual Care Response Team (SRT) is an integral part of the ARC Critical Response Team and is deployed following aviation and other transportation disasters, mass casualties, WMD/Terrorism events, and by government request. The NACC in conjunction with the American Red Cross is happy once again to offer training at the 2010 NACC Conference. The training begins at 8:00 am on Friday, March 19, 2010, and 7:00 am on Saturday, March 20, 2010. Participants are required to attend both days. This training is offered free of charge, although all accepted participants are responsible for their own training and maintenance. Given the limited class size and necessity for a formal application process we cannot guarantee that every request to attend will be able to be honored. Members in good standing may apply. Therefore, it is imperative that you submit your application prior to February 1, 2010. For an application and specific requirements, please contact Susanne Chawszczewski at schaw@nacc.org.
