From the NACC staff, we extend to you prayers and wishes for a blessed Christmas and New Year 2010! We are very blessed to be serving you, our members, and to be supporting the remarkable ministry of spiritual care. Daily I voice my gratitude to God for the honor to be serving you.
Wow, we are now closing out not only 2009, but the first decade of the 21st century! My wife, Jackie, and I are invited this year to her friend’s annual New Year event. Her friend asks all guests to submit to her before the end of the year their 2009 top ten events! These events can be personal or professional. Before she receives them, she creates “best of” categories and at the party gives a small prize to her chosen winners! It’s a fun way to get to know more about people. Just to create the list is also a potentially grace-filled exercise -- to name God’s blessings of 2009. I have been working on mine. I invite you to name and bless God for your top ten of 2009!
What if we each extended that to identifying our top ten for the “first ten” of the 21st century? What are my top ten blessings of this first decade, of 2000-2009? Would this exercise be part of a personal meditation to reflect on the mystery, meaning, and movement of God in my life? Aren’t noticing and naming God’s presence, recognizing and embracing God’s purpose in my life, the “way of salvation” God is offering me? Do I take the time to name my days, weeks, and years?
What if we were to make this a reflective process with our pastoral staff? What would be the top ten events of your pastoral staff? What caring moments? Which deaths? What healings? Which families? What staff members’ experiences? What exchange among you? What ritual/prayer service? What graced exchange? I suspect this can also be a very intimate, even painful, moment that is not easily shared. Maybe each person is given time to make their list, and each is invited to share one item on their top ten. What a graced way this could be to bond in the mystery of your work together.
May the final days of this year, this decade, offer you a few moments to call out to God with heart-filled gratitude for life, for you, for your family, for being alive at this time with all its promises, challenges, and LIFE itself, and the One in whom we live, move, and have our being.
Appreciatively,
David Lichter
Executive Director
In the past couple of weeks we have learned of several new appointments of our NACC members. Wouldn’t it be good to share these with each other? Starting with our next NACC Now, on January 4, 2010, we will begin sharing the new positions we learn about from you. Share the news! We can congratulate and pray for one another as we take on new responsibilities. Please send your name, new position, where, starting date to Cindy Bridges at cbridges@nacc.org.
Please consider leadership work with NACCIn the coming weeks, we will be seeking candidates for new members of our NACC Board of Directors, Commissions, and Panels. We need you to consider providing leadership to NACC. Your leadership starts in small ways, and can be exercised in a variety of ways. Please watch for David Lichter’s Executive Director column in the January-February 2010 Vision to learn more about your leadership and NACC.
Do you know about the NACC Nomination Panel?Last spring the NACC Nomination Panel was formed to help NACC identify, encourage, and qualify potential nominees for our NACC Board, Committees, Commissions, and Panels. To learn more about the Panel and who currently its members are, go to: www.nacc.org/aboutnacc/nominationpanel.asp.

Sudden death of a long-time NACC memberAnnette Castello of Venice, Florida, a long-time, active and contributing member of NACC, died suddenly on Dec. 6, 2009, in a tragic automobile accident. Born in Brooklyn, NY, she was the wife of the late Jack Wilcox. Survivors include many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was most recently a pastoral minister for Epiphany Cathedral in Venice. She was a cherished member of and recently featured volunteer for NACC (www.nacc.org/volunteers/vom_janfeb2009_ac.asp) and also served as an Interview Team Educator from 2004 to 2007. We commend you to the Lord, Annette! You may send condolences, visit www.farleyfuneralhome.com.
What are you doing with CPE distance learning? Thanks to those who have expressed interest. We want to extend this invitation one more time. Some programs offer it; some want to explore it. How does one develop and offer distance learning opportunities for CPE? CHA and NACC want to learn what programs are offered, as well as pull together resources and advance this possibility. We are seeking both to learn what you are doing, if you are offering some type of distance learning, as well as to assemble a task force to assist with reviewing what exists and help provide a resource for others. Please e-mail David Lichter (dlichter@nacc.org) if you are currently offering some sort of distance learning and/or are willing to be part of a task force. Thank you in advance!
Please let us know of your address changes!Over the past weeks, more mail is being returned to the NACC office because of outdated addresses. We are charged for returned mail, and we then need to contact you for a current address. Help us be good stewards of our NACC resources! Please notify us right away of address changes. E-mail Mary Pawicz (mpawicz@nacc.org) with your changes. Thank you!

Seeking Items for the Silent Auction – NACC 2010 ConferenceWe had wonderful success with a silent auction at our NACC 2008 National Conference thanks to the initiation and leadership of Linda Piotrowski. Thank you again, Linda! We invite members to bring to the 2010 Conference handmade or other types of items, including items from your institution, for our silent auction to be held at the conference. Share your talents and gifts to benefit other members! Proceeds will go towards conference scholarships. If you are interested in contributing an item, please contact Susanne at schaw@nacc.org.
American Red Cross SRT Training – NACC 2010 ConferenceThe American Red Cross Spiritual Care Response Team (SRT) is an integral part of the ARC Critical Response Team and is deployed following aviation and other transportation disasters, mass casualties, WMD/Terrorism events, and by government request. The NACC in conjunction with the American Red Cross is happy once again to offer training at the 2010 NACC Conference. The training begins at 8:00 am on Friday, March 19, 2010, and 7:00 am on Saturday, March 20, 2010. Participants are required to attend both days. This training is offered free of charge, although all accepted participants are responsible for their own training and maintenance. Given the limited class size and necessity for a formal application process we cannot guarantee that every request to attend will be able to be honored. Members in good standing may apply. Therefore, it is imperative that you submit your application prior to February 1, 2010. For an application and specific requirements, please contact Susanne Chawszczewski at schaw@nacc.org.

Rev. Martin Montonye, DMin, ACPE Supervisor, APC Board Certified Chaplain, requests our members to participate in a 10-15 minute survey designed to gather important information about leadership and our profession. This survey is designed to help professionals answer the question, "Am I keeping up to date in my practice?" The data will be used to inform us how we are doing in practice, and to identify ongoing professional development needs.
Rev. Martin writes:
Recent survey data by the Carnegie Foundation indicates 80% of former seminary students report significant practice gaps in their preparation for ministry. Seminary alumni/ae report not feeling adequately prepared to address some of the pastoral concerns they faced, including the leadership and management roles they assumed after graduation.
Because many of us who are trained as clinicians and chaplains are now being called upon to demonstrate competency (knowledge and skills) in management and organizational leadership, I am seeking to find out where you received training (if you did), and if you did not receive explicit training, what leadership knowledge and skills you need in your current practice.
The results of this national survey will be presented at the 2010 APC and ACPE national conferences. The results will also be distributed to the participating organizations and made available upon request. Your contribution will add an important voice to the future of our professional learning community.
This survey is administered through a web-based survey. It is completely confidential and your email address will not be required. It will take approximately 10-15 minutes of your time to complete.
The survey is located at this link.
At the end of the survey you will have the opportunity to enter a drawing for a $50 gift card to Amazon.com. For those wishing to enter the drawing, you will need to include your email address. After the drawing your email address will be deleted. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this survey, please contact me at mmontonye@healthcarechaplaincy.org
Thank you in advance for your participation.
