During these past couple of weeks, I have received some e-mails from members who are out of jobs and are feeling the stress of the “job diminishment and/or loss” I mentioned in the last NACC Now issue. One noted that in that issue I mentioned three seemingly conflicting items: 1. times are tough and jobs are scarce; 2. encourage others to join the ministry; and 3. how are you using volunteers? A key concern is that it is hard to imagine encouraging others into this chaplaincy ministry because of the current and intense anguish of job loss and not seeing any signs of hope. Our hearts go out to them.
As I mentioned in my last column, situations like the one mentioned above are “causing us serious concern for ourselves, our colleagues, and the profession…” I went on to say: “… we also know that the healing ministry of Jesus must and will continue and the future of the chaplaincy profession is integrally connected with our present efforts to share God’s gift of this ministry with others. When we are tempted to be discouraged, our encouragement of others to consider this ministry is our act of hope, and of faith in God’s promise.” I pray every day and seek to hold myself accountable that these comments are not pious platitudes by an employed person. I pray we can continue to support our members who are most affected right now.
Also, in the last NACC Now, I included a request from NACC and CHA for examples of how organizations are training and using volunteers. As you know, many entities within which our members work are using volunteers in diverse ways in spiritual care departments to augment the service of board certified chaplains. How they are trained, mentored, and supervised is the question we want to pursue. What are good practices out there? We want those who are using volunteers to be able to learn from each other, and help others to best prepare to utilize these individuals. These volunteers can never be substitutes for board certified chaplains, but they can provide some valuable services. That request is included here again.
I hope most of you are able to find some regeneration time for yourselves this summer as well. May God visit you with simple signs of renewal.
Continue to send me your comments and feedback. I need it.
Appreciatively,
David Lichter

Request: CHA/NACC seek samples of using volunteers in healthcare settingsCHA and NACC are working together on reviewing current practices and trends regarding the use of volunteers in spiritual care staffing models. If you are willing to share your policies on the use of volunteers within your staff structure and your practices on introducing, using, and supervising volunteers, please send them to David Lichter at dlichter@nacc.org. We already asked for this last year – please focus on the use rather than the training. We look to provide information/education on these trends/practices in the near future.
