Executive Director’s Reflection *

It was first grade when I learned in the first lesson of the Baltimore Catechism the answer to the question of “Why did God make you?” “God made me to know Him, to love Him, and to serve Him in this world, and to be happy with Him forever in heaven.” This still rings true, doesn’t it? The mantra-like memorization and recitation of that answer left an indelible mark. Why am I here? What does it mean to be alive, to spend this day, to relate daily to the loves of my life? What about my end time, afterlife, “to be happy with” God forever in heaven? I don’t spend every moment thinking about these questions in the humdrum of daily life, but daily prayer moments keep them before me.

However, for most of us, November itself doesn’t let us forget these questions. The “Why did God make me?” question comes at us indirectly through November’s nudges. They come at us in so many ways. We can’t miss them, can we? From November 1st All Saints, to the parish’s Book of Dead/Living, to the end of liturgical year readings, to time and weather changes, to the lessening of daylight and lengthening of darkness, we can’t ignore them.

As November began, I was also reminded of these questions by two deaths. I learned of the death of Fr. Ray Wawiorka, a priest of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee as well as an early NACC member who was part of the NACC Executive Committee in the formative years of the 70’s. I remember meeting Ray more than once, and was struck by his warm, pastoral style. His end time came peacefully after a lengthy illness at 81 years of age. The other death was sudden to a dear friend of NACC and colleague, Paul Marceau. I got to know Paul as he served on the NACC Board of Directors from 2005-2010. What a beautiful man, rich human being, person of deep faith, compassionate, who lovingly mixed humor and humility! I always felt called to be more in his presence. He abruptly died at the young age of 68, after only recently retiring from his Vice President of Mission and Spirituality position at Trinity Health, and while he was fully immersed in a retirement filled with volunteering, from hospice to literacy council, to Iraqi student project, to Catholic Worker Amnesty, to numerous healthcare related initiatives. He suddenly was taken from us.

Yesterday’s “thief in the night” from I Thessalonians 5 and Matthew 25’s gospel on the talents used or buried, both refer to the darkness. Saint Paul (to distinguish from Paul Marceau) reminds his readers that they are “not in darkness” as children of the light, thus the thief of the night will not overtake them. In Matthew, being thrown into the darkness is a consequence of a wasted life by the useless servant. So, I am grateful for the beauty of the children of light, Ray and Paul, and their well-spent lives in service. Their lives embodied the answer to “Why did God make me?” They remind me to live today in the light, in gratitude for the gift of the day and my gifts for this day, until my “end time,” the sacred suddenness, visits me.

May November’s nudges lead you often to live the answer to “Why did God make you?” Thanksgiving Day will be celebrated before the next NACC Now. By the time Thanksgiving Day comes, may each of you be blessed with a profound gratitude for and awe of being alive, for our gifts, for the experience of spending our lives in service, for the gift of those who are our children of light who keep us from fearing the darkness.

The NACC staff and I wish all of you a blessed day of gratitude for the gift of your lives and ministry.

David Lichter, D.Min.
Executive Director

CHAPLAINCY NEWS, EDUCATION AND PROFESSIONAL SUPPORTS

Request: where is your palliative care chaplain? *

LuAnn Young, BCC, a Director of Pastoral Care within Sacred Heart Health System, seeks to learn of any Catholic hospital that has a chaplain dedicated specifically to Palliative Care and who isn't part of the Pastoral Care department. Most seem to staff a Palliative Care department with Pastoral Care department staff. Does anyone use such a Palliative Care Team model with its own dedicated chaplain not from the Pastoral Care department staff? If you have or know of such a model, can you please contact LuAnn at Luann.Young@shhpens.org.

In past NACC Now’s, we have alerted members to the creation of a new Subcommittee on Certification for Ecclesial Ministry and Service within the USCCB Secretariat of Catholic Education that will oversee the approval of professional standards for certification, such as NACC’s standards. Information about Celiac Disease

Recently, the NACC received a communication from someone regarding their experiences as a patient with celiac disease in two hospitals. They shared their frustration at the lack of knowledge they found from the chaplain and Eucharistic minister regarding celiac disease and their inability to receive a low-gluten host in either situation. They asked that the NACC help to share some information about celiac disease with the hope that the availability of low-gluten hosts would be explored/expanded in the healthcare settings. Please find below links to some information about celiac disease.
