Dear SCC Steering Committee -
It is with great excitement and pleasure that I share the news that the APC Board of Directors, at its meeting this past weekend, has selected Patricia Appelhans JD as our new executive director. I hope that you, as a fellow Spiritual Care Collaborative leader, will join me in welcoming her to the SCC and the stewardship of professional chaplaincy.
The board is impressed with many of Pat's accomplishments, as well as her ability to grasp our organization - where we are now and where we are heading as a professional organization. She strongly identifies with our strategic plan and has done her homework, demonstrating an understanding of our structure, certification process and standards of practice.
Pat comes to APC from SmithBucklin in Chicago, IL, where she was a director. She was responsible for all aspects of nonprofit and association management, including financial, legal, fund development, certification, personnel, membership development and retention, program development, corporate planning, management of property resources, convention and trade show management, chapter development, cost-cutting, government relations, startup association development, project management and strategic planning.
Prior to that, Pat was the chief executive officer of Girl Scouts - Sybaquay Council in Elgin, IL, where her responsibilities included directing the council's corporate planning process, developing and monitoring all budgets, managing the effective delivery of the Girl Scout program, representing and advocating the council within the communities served, successfully defending one of the camp properties from a legal action to allow for public access, and managing a staff of 38 with two retail stores and three campground facilities. With GSUSA, she developed a successful Latina recruitment program that resulted in a 12-percent increase in Latina membership.
As you can see from just these two prior jobs, Pat brings a wealth of knowledge and experience that is needed by APC as we move forward with professionalizing our profession.
In addition, she is a dedicated volunteer in her personal and professional communities - including within her church, as coordinator of a homeless shelter and as past chair of the board of the Association Forum of Chicagoland. Pat's own deep spirituality and sense of calling to this job was apparent when we interviewed her and, even more so, as members of the board spent several hours with her on Saturday evening, after she had accepted our offer to become our executive director.
Pat will begin on October 5 and her e-mail address will be pat@professionalchaplains.org. She will introduce herself through APC e-news in December and will be "meeting" you soon through our SCC conference calls. She is looking forward to greeting you in person at our meeting in Schaumburg in January 2010.
We have appreciated your prayers and ongoing support. I look forward to seeing you in January and to having you meet Pat as she begins what we hope will be many years of work with APC and SCC.
Sincerely,
Susan K. Wintz BCC, President
